September 13, 1946

• Darrell Nuckolls, a Westboro youth and member of the “famous Nuckolls baseball family,” has signed a contract as outfielder with the Boston Braves, a National League club. He will report to the club in March.

• Mrs. John McClain has sold her interest in the Texaco Motor Service to Melvin Brothers Oil Co., who will operate the business with Richard Halliday as manager. Mr. Halliday has been operating the service station at First and Main streets for several months.

• The Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199 will sponsor a show and dance tonight at the Tarkio Community Building. Bobby and Harpo, Dusty Payton and Brainless Benny Boonfuzzle will perform. Bobby and Harpo are making King Records under a five-year contract. Dusty is also heard daily over the radio and has worked in several short pictures for Paramount Studios in Hollywood as well as in several of the West Coast’s leading nightclubs. Brainless Benny is one of the nation’s top Rube-style comedians and has worked in the largest theatre circuits in the United States and Canada.

September 16, 1971

• A total of 527 children and adults participated in the 1971 summer swimming program at the Tarkio Municipal Pool. There were 266 participants from Tarkio, 114 from Fairfax, and 101 from Westboro. There were also 40 from Burlington Junction and Craig.

• The Imperial Gas Station at the corner of 9th Street and Highway 136 has been completely redone, with a new building more than twice the area of the original.

• A golf ball driven by Jack Hixson fell into the cup on the eighth green at the Tarkio Golf Course, earning Jack a first hole-in-one. The coveted feat was performed Sunday when Hixson was playing with Ted Nixon.

September 12, 1996

• In what could be one of the most unique homecomings in the area, the Tarkio High School Indians will face their neighbor school from only two blocks away at its football homecoming contest. The Indians will play the Tarkio Academy Generals.

• The first ATM in Tarkio was set up at the Farmers and Valley Bank. The FVB CheckCard is the latest time-saving service and valuable financial tool in town. It works like a check, but looks like a credit card. However, it’s not.

• The Tarkio Community Garden Club has announced the names of residents who were awarded “Yard of the Month” honors for September. Winners were: District I – Mr. and Mrs. Vic Graybill, 908 N. 6th St.; District II – Mrs. and Mrs. Gary Cooper, 1211 Elm St.; District III – Delores Fletcher, 607 College St.; District IV – Mr. and Mrs. Owen Davenport, 405 Sycamore; District V – Nida Mae Brought, 805 Chestnut; and District VI – Mary Anne White, 611 S. 3rd St.
