September 20, 1946

• Members of the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative came to Rock Port in great numbers Tuesday to attend the annual meeting and participate in the barbecue at the city park. It is estimated that around 2,500 to 3,000 people were at the park for the barbecue lunch at noon.

• A deal was made last week by Thad Kerr, realtor, in which Orville Chambers has sold to M.H. Grubb the Chambers tract at the north edge of Rock Port. The property was long known as the Gool Myers’ place.

• One of the older and most respected citizens of the Langdon community passed away Saturday, September 14. She was Mrs. Mary E. Rosenbohm, born Mary E. Rossmiller in Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois, on October 28, 1864. She came to Atchison County with her parents as an infant. Linden also lost a native. George Louis VanMeter passed away Wednesday, September 11. He was born August 21, 1871, near Linden.

September 16, 1971

• Two new teachers at Rock Port are Mr. William Curry and Miss Janet Deck. Mr. Curry is teaching psychology, American history, and international and domestic affairs. Miss Deck is the new high school physical education teacher.

• If all goes well, Gene Fletcher will open a used car business October 1 at the Salfrank Service Station on South Main Street. Fletcher has been a car salesman for the past 14 years. Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher live on a farm north of Tarkio with their four children, Jeanie 16, Kathy 15, Jackie 11, and Scott 7.

• A leg and possibly a life were saved after an hour and a half struggle to free a truck driver caught in his smashed cab Tuesday east of Rock Port on a detour on Route 136. It took three wreckers, one boom truck, and plenty of muscle by a number of concerned individuals to pry the wreck apart enough to free driver William Conder Stafford, 36, of Kansas City, Kansas.

• A high speed chase resulted in no injuries to the driver John Scott Volker, 21, of Craig, in a one-car accident. Volker came up on Trooper J.M. Hooker and Cpl. F.C. Kling on Highway 59 at an excessive rate of speed and turned off his lights. The patrol car turned around and gave chase of speeds exceeding 110 miles per hour. Volker’s vehicle crashed when making a turn, going end over end before coming to a stop.

September 12, 1996

• Anne Jordon, 78, a resident of Pleasant View Care Center in Rock Port, participated in the 16th annual Ms. Missouri Nursing Home Pageant August 27, 1996. Ms. Jordon was crowned in a tie for first runner-up.

• The traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall was viewed by several thousand people in Skidmore, Missouri. Skidmore is the smallest town to have ever hosted this traveling tribute.

• Mayor Paul and Darlene Buck showed off a 147 pound watermelon from Max and Corky Peeler’s watermelon patch.

• The city’s maintenance crew has been hard at work putting in new fire hydrants where needed the past couple of weeks.
