• Several new books have been purchased for the Tarkio Public Library. For adults, the books include “Midwest at Noon,” “The Unforeseen,” “Walking Preacher of the Ozarks,” “Singing Waters,” “The First Reader for Antique Collectors,” and “From the Top of the Stairs.” For children, the new books include “The Life of Helen Keller,” “Strawberry Girl,” “The Rooster Crows,” “Peter Rabbit,” “Peter ChurchMouse,” “The Little Engine That Could,” and “Fussbunny.” The last four books were purchased to replace worn copies.
• Tonight, the Tarkio High School Indians will play their opening game of the football season when they meet the Bengal Tigers of Falls City, Nebraska, at the college athletic field here at 8:00 p.m.
• Miss Veva Ballengee of the Tarkio College music department has made selections for a male quartet. The personnel includes: Robert Long, baritone, Lenox, Iowa; Charles McClay, second tenor, Fremont, Nebraska; Jack Mehaffey, bass, North Bend, Nebraska; and Edward Whysong, first tenor, Fairfax.
• Mrs. Lowell Campbell and little son, Dean, left Sunday night for Durham, North Carolina, where Mrs. Campbell will enter Duke University. A graduate of Tarkio College, Mrs. Campbell, the former Jean Godfrey, will take a course which will enable her to be a laboratory technician.

• High temperature this past week was 92 degrees recorded on the 27th followed by a low of 34 degrees on the 24th, and precipitation measured .42 of an inch on the 25th, according to Lester Morton, local official weather observer.
• The Men’s Brotherhood of St. John’s Lutheran Church has taken on a project of the Christian Rural Overseas Program, commonly known as “CROP.” The men have established a Friendship Farm of 26 acres of soybeans. Half of the harvest will go to CROP. The men in the Brotherhood are sharing the labors.
• William Eby has assumed the duties of manager with Peoples Natural Gas Company here. Eby, a native of Monticello, Iowa, has been manager of La Crescent, Minnesota. He will be joined by his wife, Patricia, and son, Marc, as soon as he obtains suitable housing.
• Mrs. Marjorie Martin has resigned as social studies and English teacher at Tarkio High School. Mrs. Martin has taught in Tarkio for 16 years. She is a Magna Cum Laude honor graduate of Tarkio College with an AB degree. Her lifetime certificate included proficiencies in English, speech, drama, social studies, and core curriculum.

• Opinions [An editorial column written by Will Johnson]: “I found someone else who says the sign at the corner of Ninth Street and Hwy. 136 East bothers them – Ninth is spelled ‘Nineth.’ The question is, do visitors from out of town think we can’t spell or that the street is named ‘Nineth?’ You tell me.”
• Scott Armstrong, store manager of the newest Place’s Discount Center, announced the planned opening of his store in Tarkio. The store, located at 202 Main Street, will have its grand opening Tuesday, October 8.
