September 27, 1946

• One of those lengthy and expansive automobile carriers, which transport a load of four cars at a trip, upset a couple of miles south of Fairfax Friday, badly damaging the cars. The driver had left the cab momentarily to assist another transport driver when the brakes of the carrier failed to hold and the load went into a ditch.

• Mrs. F.E. Meadows, a long-time resident of Rock Port, died at the Hamburg hospital September 21 as a result of a hip fracture suffered three weeks before. Lorene (Wright) Meadows was born October 10, 1864, in Nebraska City, Nebraska. She was married to Fountain E. Meadows on June 12, 1890, at the Cottage Home Hotel in Rock Port, which her parents operated for many years as one of northwest Missouri’s most popular hostelries.

• Patsy Jo Noah, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Noah of Rock Port, not only won first place in Class 1 for babies between 6 months and 2 1/2 years in the better babies contest, but she also won the grand championship of the contest at the Atchison County Fall Fair.

September 23, 1971

• Representatives of North Star Lodge No. 157 of Rock Port will attend the historic 150th annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of Missouri next Monday and Tuesday in St. Louis. Representatives or voting delegates will include C.O. Husing, Worshipful Master, and Joe McElfish, Past Master. The Grand Lodge was founded in a series of meetings in St. Louis in 1821.

• One of the largest land sales in Atchison County in recent years was held September 15 at public auction to settle the estate of Lawrence Stoner. A total of 929 acres of land sold in five tracts, bringing over $437,000. Bud Martin of Watson purchased 240 acres for $147,840, Marvin Jenkins  of Chillicothe purchased a 77 acre tract for $29,260, Joe Frede of Rock Port purchased 151 acres for $84,560, LeRoy Gubser of Hamburg purchased 193 acres for $82,411, and Al Schroeder purchased 268 acres for $93,800.

September 19, 1996

• The Rock Port School District has received a $4,051 grant for the 1996-97 school year from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The grant proposal was prepared by Jamie Evans, sixth grade teacher at Rock Port R-II. The new project, “Show-Me Science,” is designed to provide sixth graders the opportunity to problem solve and apply critical thinking strategies through the use of modular kits.

• The Women’s International Bowling Congress commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Rock Port Women’s Bowling Association. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of Blue Jay Bowl. Helen Fentiman, owner of Blue Jay Bowl, and Jo Stevens, president of the Rock Port Women’s Bowling Association, accepted a plaque.
