October 4, 1946
• Tarkio citizens will observe Fire Prevention and Clean-Up Week, October 6-12, with an all-out cleaning campaign. All businessmen are to sweep the streets in front of their businesses at six o’clock Monday morning or have someone do it for them. The streets are to be swept to the center of Main where trucks will pick up the trash and haul it off. Residences are to put their rubbish in the alleyways to be picked up.
• Kathryn Kinney Oaks, a 1937 graduate of Tarkio College, will present a recital October 10 at David Rankin Hall. She studied at the music conservatories in Portland, Oregon, and San Francisco, California. She was chosen seventh of 300 in the Metropolitan Auditions of the Air.
• Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stevens recently became the managers and operators of the G.I. Cafe on Main Street. The cafe was formerly known as the Green Lantern.
October 7, 1971
• The Atchison County Sheriff’s Department was notified late Monday night by Special Agent John Silvers of Burlington Northern Railroad that there was an interruption in the telegraph lines. A pole had been climbed north of Langdon and five strands of copper wire had been cut. There was 1,040 feet of the wire stolen.
• A dinner honoring Mary E. McEnaney, who will be 100 years old on October 14, will be held Sunday, October 10, at the Tarkio Legion Building. Mary was born in the Westboro community October 14, 1871, and lived there until she was 18. She then went by wagon train to Oklahoma with her husband, Joe Simmons, and homesteaded. After her husband’s death, she married William McEnaney and moved to Seneca, Kansas. After Mr. McEnaney’s death, she and the children returned to Westboro. Of nine children born to her, five are living and she is the grandmother to 23, great-grandmother to 62, and great-great-grandmother to 56.
• American Legion members worked Saturday removing two dead trees in the front parking lot of the legion building. The men working were accompanied by two young boys, Tim and Scott Morehouse, and one observer reported that Tim and Scott seemed to accomplish the most work.
October 3, 1996
• Tarkio Elementary students performed the Macarena at haltime of the Indians’ football game Saturday, September 28.
• In football action, the Generals won their first game ever when they traveled to Slater, Missouri, to compete. The game was so far away that they left at 10:00 a.m. for a 5:00 p.m. game. Tarkio senior quarterback Brock Nuckolls suffered a season-ending injury when he broke his leg during the Indians’ loss to Princeton.
• Heartland Recreation Center will re-open October 7 after being closed for a month for a facelift. The main project during the shutdown was a new gymnasium floor installation. A few other improvement projects were completed, as well as a new, computerized membership program.
