October 4, 1946

• The Mail recently printed an item about an unusual planting of corn on the Arthur Allbee farm east of Watson, where the rows were on such a steep hillside that a person can hardly stand on the plot. Wednesday, Mr. Allbee brought to the Mail office an ear of corn from this field which measured 12” in length and 8” around. The 10 acres in the field will yield an average of 100 bushels per acre. He cultivated it with a hoe since it was too steep to use horses. In his own words, “There’s gold in them thar hills.”

• Harry Hoon of Santana, Kansas, has purchased the Meadows home on Water Street and he will become a resident of Rock Port again after a lapse of many years. There had been much speculation since the death of Mrs. F.E. Meadows as to who would become the owner of the modern home.

• Rumor has it that a discarded cigarette dispensing machine, which had been thrown onto a local trash pile as no longer serviceable, yielded a veritable jackpot the other day when it was “kicked around” and coughed up more than $31 in coins.

• This section got its first frost of the season Sunday night with a white coating on roofs Monday morning when the thermometer registered down almost to 32 degrees.

September 30, 1971

• The new Blue Jay Stadium is boasting quite a crowd and quite a game. An unknown player wearing white made two touchdowns off the field during the game September 17. The phantom left his mark on James Forbis’ parked 1963 Ford, which had been tackled in the right rear. Steven R. Garland’s parked 1970 Chevrolet also had damage, this time to the left rear. With a player like this who can hit from both sides, the officials (city) are anxious to sign him up for the pros.

• Assault with a chain saw proved to be the most exciting case appearing before Judge Clark Gore in Magistrate Court at the Atchison County Courthouse in Rock Port Tuesday. A man is charged with assaulting another man with a chain saw with the saw turned on and running in a manner “likely to produce great bodily harm, injury, or death.”

• Miss Cathy Alloway, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Alloway, Rock Port, and Rick Herron, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dean Herron, Langdon, were married August 20 at the Christian Church. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jan Weston.

September 26, 1996

• A centennial book commemorating the history of the Rock Port Fire Department has been put together. Fire Chief Harold Perry accepted a plaque given to the Rock Port Fire Department by Glenn Littles (The Little Hobby Shop) commemorating the centennial of the Rock Port Fire Department. The Fire Department held a dinner celebrating the centennial, with more than 380 people attending.

• The Macarena was performed by students on Main Street during Old Fashioned Saturday Night.

• Bud Husing was presented with a plaque recognizing his years of service on the Northwest Missouri Industries board.
