October 11, 1946
• Father Fidelis Goetz, O.S.B. (Order of St. Benedict’s), announced Sunday to his congregation that he is being transferred from the Tarkio parish of St. Paul’s Catholic Church to a new monastery of the Benedictine order at Benet Lawe, Wisconsin, where he will teach. Father Goetz has been here since February of 1934, with the exception of six months spent in California.
• Rather unusual in the past week’s weather observances at the U.S. Airways Communications Station was the fact that the coldest temperature of the period occurred during the afternoon rather than in the early morning hours. The low mark occurred at 5:30 Sunday afternoon, the mercury having fallen to 48.2 degrees.
• A five hundred dollar reward is offered by the Atchison County Court for the apprehension and conviction of the criminals who robbed the county treasurer’s safe of $785 early last Friday morning. The burglars gained entrance by prying up a window and breaking the lock. They had broken the lock on the half-inch steel door of the vault, then used an electric drill to break the lock on the door of the fireproof safe inside the vault.
• Kirby Page, famous author and lecturer, will speak in Tarkio at three forum meetings Sunday, October 13. Kirby Page has written 22 books and is now working on his 23rd, “Now Is The Time To Prevent A Third World War.” He has also written 17 pamphlets and numerous magazine.
October 14, 1971
• Mr. and Mrs. Dale Livengood have purchased the two story building at 212 Main Street from Mr. and Mrs. Voyne Smith. The Fabric Boutique was located there. Livengood Accounting Service will move into the building in the near future.
• Gerald McEnaney was admitted to Fairfax Community Hospital late Tuesday for treatment of first, second, and third degree burns to the face and body suffered when the tractor he was operating caught fire on a farm east of Tarkio. There was extensive damage to the tractor.
• The Mule Barn Theatre is pleased to announce “110 in the Shade” as the fall production for the 1971-72 season. This musical comedy is scheduled to open Wednesday evening, October 27th, for a two-week run.
October 10, 1996
• Tarkio Postmaster Dave Wynn announced that, effective Monday, October 14, the Tarkio Post Office lobby will close at 8 p.m. seven days a week. Wynn regrets the inconvenience, but vandalism and loitering problems have forced this decision.
• Artist-in-Residence Ralph Cheo Thurman will be in the Tarkio community the week of October 14-18 appearing in classrooms at Tarkio Academy and Tarkio R-I. Mr. Thurman works with a concept called, “The Circle of Life and Creativity,” teaching creative writing through short stories and poetry.
• The sixth grade class at Tarkio Elementary, their teachers, and some parents participated in a Miles for Meals Walk-A-Thon Thursday, October 3, 1996, in Tarkio. The event raised funds for the Tarkio Senior Center.
• The President of Place’s, Charles Place, spoke to the crowd gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony which kicked off the grand opening celebration for Tarkio’s new Place’s Discount Store.
