• Streamlined and in modern dress, Von Flotow’s popular opera, “Martha,” will be sung in English by a group of celebrated young artists next Wednesday night, October 23, at David Rankin Hall. The story, which concerns the events that befall two court ladies who as a joke let themselves be engaged as maids to work on a farm, is unfolded in song under the direction of Emile Renan, famous American baritone of opera, radio, and concert.
• In the spirit of Halloween, a fun-for-all party will be held Wednesday, October 30, on Main Street where a parade of miscellaneously-costumed “kids” from 1 to 60 years of age will be formed promptly at 7:45 o’clock. Prizes will be awarded for costumes and also for the winning of cracker-eating, string-eating, and pie-eating contests to be held on a platform at the intersection near the Walnut Inn.
• The Hon. William C. Cole, member of Congress from the Third Congressional District, is seeking reelection on the Republican ticket and will be in Tarkio to meet the voters Wednesday. With Mr. Cole will be the Hon. Ray Weightman, who seeks the office of circuit judge of the Fourth Judicial District.

• Pizza was the main item on the school lunch menu Wednesday of last week as the nation’s schools observed National School Lunch Week. The theme was Beautify America – Feed Children. Four hundred seventy-eight Tarkio students were served Wednesday along with 24 1/2 million others across the nation.
• Tarkio High School athletic teams, music department and organizations have filled the new trophy case in the gymnasium foyer and more space is needed. The senior class of 1970 has donated $122 and the senior class of 1971 has contributed $83 toward a new case. This leaves a balance of $372 to be raised for a new case.
• The peppy cheering section for junior high athletes is led by seventh and eighth grade cheerleaders Debby Nuckolls, Nancy Davidson, Darcie Lade, Lesa Bywater, Martha Henry, and Dianna Shinpoch.
• Royalty selected by the Tarkio High School Student Body to reign over last Friday’s homecoming festivities were King Bobby Vette and Queen Mary Ellen Davis.

• The 10th Street Restaurant is advertising Spaghetti Nights Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19.
• The Tarkio Fire Department gave fire truck rides to Honey Tree Nursery School students in Tarkio in celebration of National Fire Safety Week.
• John and Elizabeth Jones are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary October 20, and Harold and Margaret Clement are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary October 31.
• Bill Lindsay, Industrial Arts teacher at Tarkio R-I, has announced that the school’s shop will be open to the public each Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Anyone who needs to use tools or equipment at the shop for various projects is encouraged to use this time to do so.
• Tarkio High School will send two golfers to this year’s Girls’ Golf State Tournament. Brooke Vette and Ambera Wennihan finished in the top 10 at Districts to qualify for State.
