• Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Peck, who breed Shetland Shepherd dogs for sale and exhibition purposes, have made several recent winnings. Mrs. Peck was in Indianapolis, Indiana, last Sunday with one of her dogs which was adjudged the best of winners. The previous Sunday, the Pecks were in Des Moines, Iowa, where their brace of puppies were adjudged the best and they took second in the working group.
• Mrs. E.M. Waugh added to The Mail’s display window Tuesday afternoon some exceptionally large sweet potatoes, one of which weighed five pounds and another three pounds. She stated that the entire yield from one hill totalled 9 3/4 pounds.
• The ability to speak several languages is an asset, but to be able to hold your tongue in one language is priceless.
• Last Saturday afternoon, the body of W.G. Ganz was found by Ben Spittler and Billy Frede in the Missouri River. Mr. Ganz disappeared at Nebraska City, Nebraska, after he was seen buying a foot passenger ticket to cross the Waubonsie Bridge.
• Mrs. Harry Rogers entertained 19 members of the Peg-Away Club and four guests October 11. The group was instructed in the methods of fitting ready-to-wear. At the next meeting, “diets to fit the waistline” will be discussed.
• This section got its first heavy frost of the season Thursday night. Several persons from the country reported seeing snowflakes in considerable quantity, although it was almost invisible in town.
October 14, 1971
• A total of $111,220 was paid by bidders for 294.1 acres of land sold at public auction October 9 to settle the estate of Mrs. Verna Stoner. There were seven separate tracts of land all located 2 1/2 miles east of Watson with I-29 running through it. The largest tract of 114.8 acres sold for $732 per acre to Albert Jochim and sons, Watson, for a total of $84,033.
• Fifty-year pins were presented to five Rock Port Masons at ceremonies at the North Star Lodge No. 157 AF & AM Monday night. Those reaching 50 years in Masonry are Raymond Smith, Sheldon Boettner, Willard Scamman, Ray Richards, and Russell Zuck.
• Extremely dry weather coupled with fall harvesting has brought on fire season with a vengeance. Four fires were reported in a one-week period just after Fire Prevention Week. A fire at the Harrison Bailey Farm caused a propane tank, bin dryer and steel bin to be completely destroyed. A bluff and timber fire north of Archie Bond’s farm thankfully didn’t do any serious damage. The firemen were called back to the Harrison Bailey farm due to a combine catching standing corn on fire and burning five acres of corn. The fourth fire was a grass and field fire at the Marvin Leseberg farm west of Phelps City.

• Rock Port Homecoming king candidates are Tyler Gebhards, Zach Viets, and Danny Palmer and queen candidates are Jennifer Eilers, Gena Hunter, and Cashie Nelson.
• Dan and D.J. Burke of Rock Port and their children, Kavin and Ryleah, are proud to announce the birth of Kaci Leigh. Kaci was born at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri, on September 16.
• The Atchison County Highway Department dedicated two bridges on October 3, Bridges 369 North and 369 South. Bridge 369 North is located four miles east of Fairfax on Highway 46 and 1 3/4 miles north. Bridge 369 South is located four miles east of Fairfax on Highway 46 and north, which is just south of Bridge 369 North.
• The Slo Rollers Car Club held a car show September 29 at the Rock Port City Park. There were 144 entries. Judging was done by area volunteers.
