FBLA is promoting the MoDOT Buckle Up Phone Down (BUPD) campaign this fall. MoDOT is challenging Missouri businesses and private individuals to buckle up and put their phones down.

The Buckle Up Phone Down campaign is tackling the two most impactful actions a driver can take to prevent crashes – or survive if one occurs.

First, drivers can put their phones down when they slide behind the wheel. Distracted driving is a major cause of crashes, not only in Missouri, but in the entire United States. The Missouri Highway Patrol reports that cellphones were involved in nearly 2,500 crashes in 2019 alone, and over the past five years, cellphone related crashes have increased by 30%.

Next, people can buckle up each and every time they get in a vehicle. In 2020, of the 987 people killed in vehicle accidents, 67% were unbelted. “Nearly every fatal crash that occurs is preventable,” said Missouri State Highway Patrol Public Information and Education Director, Cpt. John Hotz. “Over 90% of these crashes were the result of someone simply making a poor decision, primarily: driving too fast, driving distracted or driving impaired. Many of those killed were not wearing a seat belt.”

The Buckle Up Phone Down Challenge is trying to change these numbers. Videos, social media posts and a dedicated website will feature citizens and employees of participating businesses giving the “thumbs up-thumbs down” sign to show their support of the effort. The website is located at https://www2.modot.org/BuckleUpPhoneDown/ and will also feature the Wall of Fame where participating businesses and agencies can display their logos to show their support.

The Rock Port FBLA chapter will promote BUPD during the week of October 18-22 at the home football and volleyball games, where there will be opportunities to take the BUPD pledge and score some giveaways. Please help Missouri move toward zero deaths by taking the BUPD challenge.
