Rock Port hosted Mound City Panthers Friday, October 22, for their final game of the regular season.
To start the evening the seniors participating in football, cross country, and band and their parents were honored for their contributions to the Rock Port R-II School system.
Rock Port’s Jarrett Hunter would kick the ball for a touch back giving Mound City the ball on the 15 yardline. The Panthers, on their first possession, marched the ball down the field and struck first. Rock Port wasted no time answering back as Dakota Evans returned the kick-off 70 yards for a touchdown knotting the game at 6.
The Jays would strike again as they ran a reverse to Micah Makings who hit Corbyn Jakub on a go route for a 55 yard touchdown reception, making the score 12-6.
Mound City would find offensive success before the half as they would put two more scores on the board and go in at half time with a 20-12 lead over the Jays.
It wouldn’t be until the fourth quarter before Rock Port would reach the end zone on a wingback reverse by Dakota Evans to tie the game at 20. The Jays’ defense stepped up and held the Panthers out of the end zone the entire second half and in the final second Micah Makings would punch it in to give Rock Port a 26-20 lead and the win.
Rock Port ended the regular season 6-3 and will start District play on Friday, November 5, at 7:000 p.m., taking on East Atchison at Tarkio.
