• Local football enthusiasts have chartered a bus from the Burlington Trailways to make the trip to Lincoln Saturday to see the Missouri-Nebraska game.
• Alterations and repairs to the Paramount Theatre started some days ago and included the roof being completely removed, the wall on the north and south completely razed and only the front and rear walls left standing. As a result, operations at the theatre are suspended until the extensive repairs can be completed.
• Last week, the Hamburg Reporter published what is without a doubt the most voluminous edition ever attempted by a weekly newspaper in this part of the country. The issue contained 11 eight-page sections for a total of 88 pages, which were filled with matter pertinent to Iowa’s Centennial being celebrated this year.

• The Lord’s Acre Day at Westboro October 23 netted $6,240.43.
• At a luncheon held in Holton, Kansas, October 21, attended by members of the City Commission and Chamber of Commerce of the city of Holton, a joint announcement was made that Aristo Foods, Inc. will sublease its meat processing plant at Holton, known as “Kansas Meat Packers,” to Missouri Beef Packers, Inc. MBP was incorporated in 1966 in Rock Port and operates beef processing plants in Rock Port, Friona, Texas, and Plainview, Texas.
• Mr. and Mrs. P.B. Adamson have moved into the Alice Underwood property at 109 East Mill. The Adamsons are former residents of Langdon, where Mr. Adamson was employed 41 years by Burlington Railroad.
• Missouri’s 1971 Cancer Crusade is over the top for the 10th consecutive year. The amount reported at the end of the fiscal year was $1,261,908. In Atchison County, 125 volunteers raised $3,848.
October 24, 1996
• Brenda Lutz thoroughly enjoyed part of her birthday gift last weekend, a trip with her folks to the PBR National Bull Riding Finals at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. They stayed at Circus Circus and got to attend four rodeo performances.
• Rock Port R-II Elementary Art students designed local grocery store sacks with a “Drug-Free Message.” All of the sacks were judged and winners were: Max Anderson, 1st; Jayme Lewis and Brett Chamberlain, 2nd; Redge Herron, Talya Duncan, Elyssa Ellison, Adam Hance, and Jade Hughes, 3rd.
• Residents of Rock Port and the surrounding area awoke to snow on the ground Tuesday, October 22. If the old wives’ tale of “You can expect as many snow days for the year to be the same number as the date of the first snow” holds true, we are in for 22 days of snow.
• Coburn B. Jackson, Ag Credit Manager for Farm Service Agency Credit (formerly Farmers Home Administration) has announced his retirement effective November 1, 1996, after 36 years of federal service. Thirty-two of those years were headquartered in Rock Port, serving Atchison and Holt counties.
