November 15, 1946
• Television will be an everyday word in the household of the future according to an article which appears in “Domestic Commerce.” Some of the foreseen devices which may soon be part of the nation’s daily living program: radar-controlled traffic lights, larger television screens with images appearing in their natural colors, direct dialing of long-distance calls, telephone service in automobiles, and less static and clearer radio reception. There are now six television stations with 25 under construction.
• Stringing up a few lights in the henhouse is one of the sure ways of getting more eggs during fall and winter months when prices are high and production is usually low.
• Twenty children and parents of the York community met at the York church November 4, where Miss Erma Neelly, home demonstration agent, and Allyn Engle, county agent, assisted them in forming a new 4-H club.
• New gravel is being spread on Highway 46 east of Dotham. Several car loads of gravel were shipped into Fairfax Monday to be used on the job.
November 18, 1971
• Kerr’s Super Market in Fairfax, Missouri, is advertising Hiawatha tom turkeys (16-20 lb. average) at 35¢ per lb.
• The local fire department was called to three fires over the weekend. One was a grass fire at the Merle Barr home caused by a trash burner. Another was a skillet grease fire at the Eugene Taylor home. Mrs. Taylor attempted to carry it from her kitchen resulting in severe burns to three toes on her right foot. Sunday afternoon there was a call of a grass fire two miles east of Tarkio.
• After numerous delays, all equipment in the newly-installed physical therapy department at Fairfax Community Hospital has arrived. The latest additions are two whirlpool units.
November 14, 1996
• In an effort to provide for a quality deer herd in the future, Brickyard Hill Wildlife Area in Atchison County will be open for “bucks only” hunting November 16 and 17.
• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “The City of Fairfax flew the street flags on Veterans Day. They are brand new, replacing the old ones that were stolen. The Avenue of Flags was also put up.
• The exhaustion of available telephone numbers in the 816 area code will occur in the third quarter of 1998. A recommendation has been made to make a geographic split for the code, having the Kansas City metro retain the 816 area code and the outside area receiving a new area code.
• The regular football season came to a close Friday night for the Fairfax Bulldogs. They ended the season with a 7-2 record in the 275 Conference. They have won their district games and this Saturday, November 16, will play DeKalb in a semi-final state game on the Fairfax field.
• Karen Lester of Tarkio won on a write-in campaign for the office of Public Administrator in the November 5 election.
