November 29, 1946
• Mrs. W.F. Rankin, prominent Tarkio resident and benefactress of Tarkio College, died November 23 at the age of 86. Born Lizzie Marshall, she married William F. Rankin, son of David and Sarah Thompson Rankin, May 12, 1881. They moved to Tarkio and then moved in town to their new residence in 1885. Their two children are Jesse David Rankin and Mrs. Helen Rankin Shaum. After Mr. Rankin’s death and several years ago, Mrs. Rankin gave up the maintainance of her palatial home at the top of Tarkio’s Main Street and moved in with her daughter next door. The beautiful home at the top of Main now becomes the property of Tarkio College.
• Mr. and Mrs. Amos Wolfe recently purchased the Flora Wilson property at the corner of Tenth and Main Streets.
• The Tarkio College Owls’ season will begin December 6 and includes a 21-game schedule. The squad is 23 members strong.
December 2, 1971
• A high temperature of 52 degrees was reached on the 25th last week and a low of 18 degrees was recorded on the 30th. The total precipitation measurement for the month is 4.03 inches, which is above average, according to Lester Morton, local weather observer.
• Mr. and Mrs. Jim Morrison will observe their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house to be held Sunday, December 12, in their home in Westboro, Missouri.
• The Tarkio High School Indians, a team with no previous State Championship Football experience, utilized second half offensive and defensive fury to win the Class 1-A Missouri State Championship Saturday in Maryville. The Indians beat the Greenwood Jays 35-22. Indians’ Coach Dave Palmeiro stated, “Through their eagerness, togetherness, hard hitting, and enormous will to win, they won as a team the highest honor possible in Missouri inter-scholastic football.”
• The Tarkio College Music Department will host its annual Christmas Vespers Sunday, December 5, in Leitch Chapel. Participating in the Vespers will be the College Concert Choir, the College Singers, the Chamber Orchestra, and the Brass Choir.
November 28, 1996
• Remodeling is underway for the new restaurant opening on Main Street in Tarkio. The restaurant will feature home-cooked meals by Mary Jo Vance and it is hoped the restaurant will open in December.
• Nationally known oral cancer survivor Rick Bender will speak in Tarkio Friday, December 6, at Tarkio High School. The event, sponsored by C.A.T., will give a strong message about the dangers of using chewing tobacco.
