November 29, 1946

• Mrs. Dolly Doiel of Rock Port was injured Monday morning when the southbound Burlington bus she was riding in collided with a car about two and one-half miles north of Fairfax. A car driven by C.R. Combs started to turn at a road intersection just south of the Tarkio River bridge and at the same time the bus driver was attempting to pass the car. The two collided.

• Pfc. Duane C. Tolby arrived home November 8 from a year’s service with the U.S. Army in Japan. He is now on terminal leave and will receive his discharge by mail about the middle of December.

• By their subscriptions to stock in the proposed Fairfax community hospital, the people of Fairfax, its trade territory, and other nearby communities will determine within the next few days whether a modern hospital will be built here. It is hoped to raise $110,000, which will be used to build and equip the hospital.

• Proof that the use of high analysis fertilizer pays is shown in yields produced on the land of two Atchison County farmers, one of whom is Denny White, two miles south of Fairfax. The test fields were grown by his son, Richard, as a 4-H project. Forty-one bushels per acre more was grown on land where 500 pounds of fertilizer was used than on land where there was no fertilizer at all. On land where 300 pounds per acre was used the increase was 30 bushels per acre.

December 2, 1971

• The Chamber of Commerce moved to new quarters, from the bank to the fire station. The new room has been paneled, carpeted, and new tables, chairs and equipment have been installed. The expense of the remodeling will be offset by rent saved.

• Mr. and Mrs. Everett Wake have purchased the cafe which has been operating under the name “Pearl’s Blue Bell” and plan to open today for business. The purchase agreement with Mrs. Pearl Fears included the business and the building. The new business will be known as “Kountry Kitchen” and will be open seven days a week.

• President of Tarkio College, Dr. Eldon Breazier, and his wife, were hosts recently of a dinner honoring editors of Atchison County newspapers. The dinner was held at the college manse. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Henry, Mr. and Mrs. Earle Sims, Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Cox, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Johns, and Rev. and Mrs. Lloyd Dalbey.

• December has barely begun its exasperating existence and Christmas lights and ornaments have already been in place more than a week. Lights went on Thanksgiving eve and the Fairfax business area beamed as it never did before. Considerable expense has gone into the project of upgrading holiday ornamentation, but well-planned procedures have resulted in the bills being entirely paid.

November 28, 1996

• Larry Deatz, a former Fairfax resident, has opened his own business, Deatz Ag Repair, at his home in Watson, Missouri. Larry formerly worked at Fairfax Implement, Oregon Truck & Tractor, and Athen Implement. He has 12 years of Case IH experience and two years of John Deere experience.

• The Fairfax Bulldogs played an excellent game Saturday for the 8-man State Championship Title, but ultimately lost to undefeated North Andrew 18-44. The team had some hard blows this past week when their starting quarterback was suspended and their back-up quarterback was in a car accident and hospitalized.
