• The Paramount Theatre, which closed October 22 for repairs, will reopen Friday evening. Besides a new roof and two walls being replaced, the interior has been completely revamped with new seating. The ceiling has been finished in sound-proofing material. The lobby has been rearranged for the addition of a neat popcorn and candy concession.

• The home of Rev. and Mrs. LeRoy Crocker was the scene of two weddings last Saturday morning. Wm. Wilkins of Maitland married Evelyn Dorothy May Harris of Covington, England. They met while Mr. Wilkins was stationed with his company in Covington. Also marrying were Everett Leo Siebert and Lois Jean Hicks, both of Fairfax.

• The Mail received an offer of a 50-hectare claim of land in Ecuador this week, free except for a small commission-transfer charge. The offer suggests an altitude of 1,000 feet, ample rainfall and virgin soil, testing equal to that of Java, “long recognized as the best on earth.” “Sorry, but we are not interested.” Wonder how The Mail got on Ecuador’s “sucker” list.

December 2, 1971

• A high speed chase resulted in a totally demolished Corvette and only minor injuries to the two occupants. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed two miles north of Tarkio when it skidded 249 feet, struck a dirt embankment, flipped 70 feet in the air, struck an embankment again, then traveled 77 feet before coming to rest on its top in the southbound lane. The driver received only bruises about the face and his companion received a laceration on the nose.

• The appointment of postal careerist Charles J. “Jack” Hunt as Postmaster at Rock Port was confirmed November 26. Hunt is the 25th postmaster for the local office.

• Santa came early for the customers of the Rock Port Board of Public Works when they announced a 50 percent cut in electric rates for residential users in the month of November.

• Breadeaux Pizza is celebrating its fourth year in business. Anniversary specials will be held November 29 through December 4. You can buy pizzas at the price you paid four years ago.

• The Family Medical Center in Rock Port is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Bradley Jones to its medical staff. Dr. Jones earned his doctor of osteopathy degree in 1993 from the University of Health Science in Kansas City, where he graduated with honors.

• Rock Port’s returning letter winning senior wrestlers went to a Kansas City Chiefs vs. Chicago Bears football game Sunday, November 17, at Arrowhead Stadium. The boys – Chris Roup, Troy Clodfelter, Zach Viets, and Wade Smith – attended a party after the game and met K.C. Wolf, Tracy Simien, and Neil Smith. They took pictures with the Chiefs and Troy even wrestled a little against Neil Smith.

• The “Dickens Christmas in Rock Port” is a special event planned for December 6-8 by the Chamber of Commerce and its committees. Six mini parks with country grown and cut trees will be set up on Main Street. A dinner theatre, horse and buggy rides, visits with Father Christmas, a brass and pipe concert, a live nativity, holiday open houses at the local stores, Christmas caroling, and a display of 13 novel table settings at the Star Hill Prairie Art Center are just some of the festive things to witness those days.
