• The University of Missouri School of Journalism offers ex-service men the opportunity to learn linotype operation. The Mail knows from personal experience that there is a shortage of men versed in this phase of the printing business.

• According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, Atchison County farm families last year produced crops and livestock with the record value of more than $9,207,000, nearly doubling their annual gross income in comparison with 1940. The number of farm homes reporting electric lights have increased from 581 to 769 and it is said that farmers in the county today have 480 more tractors than in 1940.

• P.O. Weaver lost his life about 11:30 Sunday night when fire destroyed his modest home in northwest Rock Port. Also living in the home were Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Huff and baby. The fretting of the baby awakened the parents who found Weaver’s room ablaze. They made it out and Huff went back to Weaver’s room and roused him to get out. Weaver responded that he was coming, but must have succumbed to the smoke before he could escape. Huff made another effort to get Weaver, but the flames were too far advanced to get back in.

December 23, 1971

• Old Saint Nick will pay a visit to residents of the Atchison County Jail on Christmas Eve. He will be delivering a dinner made by Mrs. Santa Claus consisting of ham, candied sweet potatoes, green beans, macaroni and cheese, apple salad, hot rolls, and cherry pie.

• Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Harmes of Rock Port will observe their 50th anniversary December 27. Herbert Harmes and Thelma White were married December 27, 1921, at the Methodist parsonage in Albion, Nebraska, by Rev. Main. They have been residents of this community all their married life.

• Jess Herron, a life-long resident of Atchison County, celebrated his 80th birthday December 20. He and his wife, Mable, recently moved into the home they purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kramer at 205 East Cass.

• In case you’re having difficulty reading the Atchison County Mail this week and the lines seem to stagger somewhat, do not be alarmed in thinking that you’ve begun your New Year’s celebration early. The Mail has a screw loose (and no remarks, please) in one of the linotypes which is causing the type to veer off.

• The Texaco State Line Cafe at the Missouri-Iowa state line was damaged by fire December 21 at approximately 3:00 p.m. The cafe is owned by the Hippo Melvin Oil Co. and leased to Ralph Brookshire. The fire began in the deep fat fryer in the kitchen.

December 19, 1996

• The Rock Port R-II student body looked on as history was in the making last Friday, December 13, when the Tech Dome was inflated to get the wrinkles out and provide a mold for the foam. The foam expands up to three fold if it is within temperature limits.

• Doctor Wallace Carpenter was chosen as one of two people from the Northwest District by the Northwest District Athletic Directors Association to be presented the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Carpenter has been a sideline doctor for 44 years for the Rock Port Blue Jay Football Team.
