January 3, 1947

• Bill Abell returned to Tarkio Thursday from the Osteopathic hospital in Kansas City where he was treated for a serious injury to his left eye. The injury occurred Friday night as he was taking a fur off of a fur stretcher and the spring snapped, hit his glasses, and caused the broken glass to pierce his eye.

• A very unusual drop of 24.7 degrees in three hours’ time occurred last Friday, bringing some cold weather to Tarkio and continuing to a mark of 6.7 degrees below zero at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, December 29, the lowest temperature of the past week. The unusual drop occurred the same day in which the highest temperature of the week was recorded, 67.7 degrees at 1:28 p.m. Three hours later the cold front moved in and the mercury had gone down to 43 degrees.

January 6, 1972

• In 1964, Kenneth Lee heard the warning that anyone who skipped school to go deer hunting would be in big trouble – probably wouldn’t be allowed to play football. So Kenneth, then a 16-year-old Rock Port High School student, solved that problem by deer hunting almost within sight of his house, downed a buck, and made it to school on time. The rack was measured and found to be the new non-typical rack state record deer exactly 7 years to the day after young Lee downed the big buck, which is on display in the family home near Rock Port. Lee is now serving in the Army in Germany.

• Sgt. Keith Wensel, who is stationed in Vietnam, was recently on TDY to Bangkok, Thailand. While there, he was able to meet up and spend two days with his brother, Sgt. LeRoy Wensel, who is stationed in Thailand. Keith returned home January 2 from Vietnam for a 30-day leave. He will then be stationed at Grand Forks, North Dakota.

• In January, the Tarkio College Humanist Tradition and Contemporary American Culture project will consist of poetry reading, lectures and discussions conducted in the Tarkio, Rock Port, Fairfax, and Westboro communities.

January 2, 1997

• New houses are being built in Tarkio to help with the housing shortage. An apartment duplex is being built in the vacant lot behind the Tarkio Family Practice Center. One house is being built on 7th Street, a half block south of Park Street. Another is being built at 7th and Elm streets. A Heartland home is being built for Tony and Kara Napierala at Sixth and Ash streets.

• Santa Claus went to Tarkio Family Practice Center to meet with the kiddos who stopped by for a visit.

• Tarkio High School Wrestling Homecoming candidates are: Diana Koeberl, Nicole Vette, and Tralaine Umbarger, queens; and Matt Stevens and Brian Heits, kings.
