January 24, 1947

• Miss Virginia Walkup, who is with the American Embassy in Manila, Philippine Islands, has written about her experiences: “…The Far East is rather interesting…I went on a picnic on Rizal Day, the 30th of December. Judge Delegado (Philippine head of war damage commission in Manila) and the Wm. Winters were along. The Winters are on a world radio expedition and were here during the war. Winter broadcast during the Jap occupation over a small radio station to encourage the Filipinos and now the latter think a lot of him.”

• Rock Port’s trapshooters will have a bluerock shoot at the city park Sunday afternoon and marksmen from the East side will compete again others from the West side of Main Street. The losers will have to buy dinner for the winners.

• The Bentley Grain Company has opened a central office in the rooms upstairs over the Bartholomew drug store in Rock Port, with Dan Wilds as office attendant. The company’s operations of its Watson, Langdon, Nishnabotna, and Corning elevators will be carried on from the Rock Port office.

• Mrs. Rosannah Ward, who lived for some years on a farm southwest of Phelps City, died Thursday, January 16. Mrs. Ward was the daughter of Presley and Martha Glasgo and was born September 13, 1862. Her son, Sterling, was killed in France during World War I and Mrs. Ward, being a Gold Star Mother of World War I, made a pilgrimage to France. She visited the grave of her son Sterling when numerous mothers of deceased service men were taken to Europe by the government. 

January 20, 1972

• Dennis Erickson and Don Moore skated down the Tarkio River from east of Westboro to Tarkio to have dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Hale.

• Crowned at the 1972 Rock Port Basketball Homecoming last Friday evening were King Steve Houts and Queen Lesa Wessler. 

• A fine looking Case tractor owned by Royal Harmon was recently restored by Bill BeBout and Randy Brooks for an agricultural project. The restoration took approximately two weeks and $10. Ronnie Chastain steam cleaned the tractor and Randy and Bill sanded and spray painted the tractor.

January 16, 1997 

• Chats – “The Rock Port community will have the opportunity to lend a helping hand once again. There is a fish and chicken fry/auction Saturday, January 25, for Chad Rogers. Chad has had a tough time since breaking his leg in football practice and has undergone several surgeries and therapy.”

• No one can say they felt the brunt of the cold weather like Randy and Annette Smyser of Rock Port. On Friday, January 10, the below zero weather froze the pipes of their double-wide trailer on Red Star Road and in an effort to thaw the pipes, Randy placed a space heater under the trailer. However, the trailer caught fire and was a total loss. Annette was taken to Community Hospital in Fairfax and treated for smoke inhalation and was then released.

• Betty McCall retired December 31, 1996, after a total of 30 years of faithful service to Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative. Betty began working for the co-op shortly after it was established on Main Street in Rock Port.
