February 7, 1947

• Billie Strong, 18 years old, convicted in circuit court in Rock Port of forgery and sentenced to a penitentiary term, escaped from the county jail Saturday afternoon and was still at large Wednesday. A young woman, who the youth had represented to be his wife, caught the deputy sheriff off guard for a few moments when she entered the jail and got the key to the cell in which Strong was held, unlocked the door, and Strong walked out. He then stole the sheriff’s 32-caliber revolver before making his getaway. Upon discovering what happened, the deputy caught the young woman at the edge of Rock Port and returned her to jail where she is being held on a charge of assisting a prisoner to escape.

• There are still honest people in the world. Returning from a trip to New York and the east coast last week, Miss Price left her billfold in the ladies’ restroom of the Chicago union station, only noticing its absence from her purse after the train had left. On returning home she wrote the lost and found department of the station and then Saturday an express package came containing her billfold with $47 intact. A maid had seen the billfold and turned it in to lost and found.

February 10, 1972

• Marcia Graves and Mark Sly were crowned queen and king of Fairfax R-3 Basketball Homecoming following the game Friday evening.

• At the regular board of education meeting last Thursday, the resignation of Tony Wilcoxson, commerce instructor, was accepted. Wilcoxson has accepted the position of high school principal in Hopkins for the next school term. In other business, the board offered a contract to Principal James Graham for the next term.

• The largest turnout of the present adult farm series heard an optimistic outlook for the 1972 crop year from a panel of agriculture experts Monday at the Elkdale community center. Phil Miller, First Stock Yard Bank; Buck Caton, Producers Livestock Commission firm; and Ivan Kanak, Stockyards Company, St. Joseph, shared their views. The annual price prediction on livestock prices as of the first Monday in December was won by Richard Davis on cattle and Kent Lawrence on hogs.

February 6, 1997

• MFA Agri Service recognized Bill Walker with a new set of Bushnell binoculars and a solid metal toy 18-wheeler with three little Bobcats on it, for his 20 years of service to MFA. In celebration of Bill’s retirement on December 31, 1996, the employees presented bill with a cap, wrench, and fishing reel. Bill went to work for MFA in 1977, being responsible for the dry fertilizer plant across from the feed store and spent many hours on the Bobcat machine.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Two ladies from Fairfax will be celebrating birthdays. Georgia Hedrick will be 96 and the other is Edith Pearce who will be 95.”

• Fairfax High School Homecoming King and Queen are Zac Smith and Megan Smith.
