February 21, 1947
• After 42 years in the same location, Dr. C.E. Cox moved his dental office this week to his residence in south Fairfax. Dr. Cox’s office has been located over the Clem Peters office, the former Farmers Bank building, which is now being converted into a modern apartment.
• Lt. (jg) Ford Franklin Burke, Jr., USNR, has received a permanent citation for his air medal from Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, for the President. Text of the complete citation includes: “For meritorious achievement in aerial flight as pilot of a plane, attached to the USS Petrof Bay, in operations against enemy Japanese forces during the landing and occupation of Leyte Island October 20 to 28, 1944. Lt. (jg) (then Ens.) Burke aided in the destruction of Japanese communication lines and strong points, scoring hits on grounded hostile aircraft, mobile equipment, enemy buildings and biovac areas…”

• O.C. Swackhamer has recently purchased the Shenandoah Livestock Auction firm and will hold his first sale Monday, February 28. Swackhamer has had long experience in the livestock business in his own operation and more recently in his association with Missouri Beef Packers.
• Abie Showalter will leave March 16 for La Junta, Colorado, to auction the H.L. Ranch Galloway production sale. This will be one of the first Galloway production sales to be held in Colorado. Harry Schack, owner of the cattle, attended a sale in Mound City, Missouri, last summer and saw Mr. Showalter in action. Mr. Schack asked Mr. Showalter to “cry” his sale.
• Miss Kathy Dearmont recently returned from a week in Los Angeles, California, where she attended Continental Airline School. Miss Dearmont is an employee of a travel agency in St. Joseph, Missouri.
• A Fairfax youth, O.C. Swackhamer, Jr., who will be 19 on March 6, is in the number one position in the draft lottery. New dates were drawn recently to determine service liability. Swacky is a student at Missouri University, Columbia.

• Valentine’s Day in Fairfax was celebrated in all its glory from old to young. School kids received balloons and candy and flowers and at Daybreak Cafe, a drawing was held to give away three flower arrangments, compliments of KG Buds. The winners were Charles Norton, Charles Golden, and Charles Meyers.
• The Lady Bulldogs Basketball Team moved their record to 19-1 by defeating the Stella Raiders 48-28. The Lady Bulldogs lead early and often.
• In the “Chronicle” – the Fairfax R-3 school section of the Forum: “Bambi Brown hopes to someday save lives. Since the end of June, Bambi has been employed as an Atchison County Ambulance dispatcher and is hoping to someday be an EMT. One of the perks associated with this job is that Bambi gets hands on training.”
