• Hogs Then and Now – In 1941, a farmer here thought he would buy from a local man a $500 used pickup for the money he would get from the sale of 34 head of hogs, but they brought in less than $500. Last week the same farmer, from the sale of 12 hogs, bought from the same man a later model used pickup for $1,000 and had some money left over.
• The Tarkio chapter of the Future Farmers of America has completed arrangements to bring Ralph Godfrey’s donkeys to town for a basketball game to be played in the high school gym March 28. The Fairfax and Tarkio FFA Chapters will tangle in a game which promises to be novel entertainment for the public.
• Miss Dorothy Lu Rankin sailed February 10 for the South Sudan where she will serve as a missionary under the Women’s General Missionary Society of the United Presbyterian Church. She is the granddaughter of John A. Rankin of Tarkio and was born in Cairo, Egypt, where her father, the late Henry Rankin, served as missionary and died in 1920.
• Hubert S. Liang will be the principal speaker at the first forum of the Institute of International Understanding sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tarkio Friday night at David Rankin Hall in Tarkio. Mr. Liang is a native of Nanchang, Kiangal, China, and is an educator, journalist, author, lecturer, and engineering economist.

• The Western Auto Store is holding its grand opening March 2 through 11. Besides great deals, the store is offering free coffee and doughnuts those days, as well as free door prizes.
• Queen Jennifer Alsup and King John Hoshor reigned over their court at Tarkio High School’s Basketball Homecoming held February 18.
• Dr. S.J. “Jap” Patterson, 72, former moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, U.S., died January 23. Dr. Patterson graduated from Tarkio College in 1921 and later from Yale University and the University of Nebraska. He received the LL.D. degree from Tarkio College in 1949 and gave the baccalaureate address in 1966.
• This week’s featured C.O.E. student is Marjorie Peregrine, a senior at THS who is training at the Flower Bowl, owned and operated by Mrs. Olga Sons. Marjorie’s main duty is that of bookkeeper, but she is also gaining experience as a sales clerk and a florist’s assistant.

• Senator Sam Graves, 33, of Tarkio was named one of four National Outstanding Young Farmers of 1997 by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.
• Roger Levings with Levings Construction of Tarkio spoke to the students of the After School Special held at the Tarkio United Methodist Church. He brought some of the equipment used in his line of work and discussed soil conservation.
