A two-vehicle crash occurred on I-29 due to the icy road conditions Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at 4:50 a.m. The accident occurred at the 111.6 mile-marker, one and one-half mile north of Rock Port, when a 2001 Mazda Tribute and a 1997 Kenworth were both southbound. The Mazda, driven by Heather M. Chambers, 31, of Dayton, Texas, slowed on the icy roadway and Travis L. Lotter, 42, of Nebraska City, Nebraska, lost control of the Kenworth. The Kenworth struck the rear of the Mazda. The Mazda traveled off the east side of the roadway and came to rest in the median on its wheels facing southwest. The Kenworth came to a controlled stop on the southbound shoulder.

Lisa L. Henderson, 55, a passenger in the Mazda, who was wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries and was transported by Atchison-Holt EMS to Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa. Chambers and Lotter, both of who were also wearing seat belts, did not report injuries at the scene. The 2001 Mazda Tribute was totaled and towed from the scene by Double M Towing of Rock Port. The 1997 Kenworth sustained moderate damage, but was driven from the scene. The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. K.F. Jeffers, who was assisted by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, Rock Port Fire Department, and Atchison-Holt Ambulance District.
