March 7, 1947

• In a letter received in recent days by Citizens Bank from Charles H. Huff of McArthur, California, a clipping was enclosed which stated that the Huffs lost their tent home by fire on January 20. An overheated stove caused the fire at Stoner’s auto camp and the Huff family was left homeless. A neighbor took them in. The Huffs are former Atchison County residents.

• Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department realized larger gross receipts from their annual ball last Friday evening than in any previous year. The department secured about $1,200 from the sale of tickets and donations and will have a nice net profit when the bills are all paid.

• Monday, March 3, marked the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Weitje Harmes of Rock Port. Mrs. Harmes’ maiden name was Mary Schnitker. The couple married at Miss Schnitker’s parents’ home near Nishnabotna March 3, 1897. Shortly after their marriage, they located on a farm not far northwest of Phelps City, where they lived until 1920 when they moved to Rock Port.

• Two recent amendments to the Federal Social Security Act are now in effect. Survivors of those who worked under both the Railroad Retirement Act and the Social Security Act after 1937 and before their death, if the death occurred after 1939, may now be entitled to monthly benefits or a lump sum payment.

March 3, 1972

• A wheel came off a trailer house being pulled and rolled into the path of an oncoming mail truck, causing a wreck 1/4 mile west of the Highway 136 and 59 intersection. The accident caused mail deliveries to be two hours late February 25.

• Live catfish were scattered for several hundred yards over U.S. 136 west of Rock Port when a live fish tank truck with a trailer and a large sand truck collided. After the accident investigation was completed and the company decided not to salvage, bystanders were allowed to pick up all the fish they wanted.

• A two-headed calf, a most unusual occurrence in nature, was born dead on the Bill DeBuhr farm east of Rock Port February 24. Veterinarian Dr. Jack Scamman said he had delivered several calves with three legs in the past 25 years, but never anything which came close to this.

• Frank Rybnick, 41, of Meade, Kansas, has been hired by the Rock Port R-II School District as the new superintendent, taking the place of Ted Windes, who is retiring at the end of this year.

February 27, 1997

• A total of $9,337.87 was presented to the Chad Rogers family Friday, February 21. Chad is facing more surgery and will be back in the hospital this week.

• Lee Schumacher and Emma Jean Morgan were united in marriage March 2, 1947, at the St. Peter’s of Evangelical Church of Langdon, Missouri, by Rev. McConnell. The Schumachers will celebrate their 50th anniversary March 2.

• There were 84 present for the Rock Port FFA-FHA Barnwarming dance and chili supper. Wade Smith was crowned Barnwarming King and Cashie Nelson was crowned Barnwarming Queen.

• Missouri ranks seventh in the nation in hay production; second if you exclude alfalfa. The importance of this crop is reflected in the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s 24th printing of the Missouri Hay Directory.
