The Allen Schiffern American Legion Auxiliary Unit 199 held an informal meeting March 14, 2022, with four members attending.

The minutes of the last meeting and the financial report will be read at the next meeting.

Membership was discussed. There are several members who need to pay their dues for this year. See or send your renewals to Barb Hines.

County Government Day has been set for March 31. The lunch menu was discussed and those who can help prepare the sandwich, vegetables and cookie bags are to be at the Legion building March 30 at 1:00 p.m. Barb, Donna and Linda Kaye will bake the cookies. Sheridan will purchase groceries for the meal.

There has been no high school girl able to attend Girls State due to other school activities. The application deadline has been extended.

A report about the District meeting held on March 5 at Parnell, Unit 528, was given by Linda Kaye. There was a guest speaker, Marvin Harper, from Post 102, Barnard, who talked about the National WWI Museum and Memorial, located in Kansas City. He spoke about the clear bridge where you walked over thousands of poppies, each representing the many soldiers who lost their lives in battle. He told how the women did their part for WWI by giving up their corsets. There was enough metal for the building of two battleships. Apparently every little bit helps! He reported that Henry Gunther was the last soldier to die in WWI. Our unit discussed taking a trip to visit the museum.

The spring rummage sale is still a go for April 22-23. The auxiliary will be accepting donations April 14, 15, 18, 19, and 20. There will be no take-in on April 21 to allow time to finish unpacking and organizing. Remember the shorter take-in time so bring your donations early!

They discussed the need to turn in tallied money spent, volunteer hours and the number assisted for veterans, families, education activities, community services, Girls State, children and youth, poppies, and the miles driven and where this information goes. Some members have started their totals for this year and shared how they are keeping track. Thank you for your service and this information!
