• Mrs. Charles W. Moore of Skidmore has purchased the residence property of Miss Tena Kramer on east Main Street.
• Dr. Edwin Wilson has installed a new X-ray machine of the latest type in his office in Fairfax and is now equipped to do a complete X-ray job and fluoroscopic work.
• Spare stamp No. 11 is now good for 10 pounds of sugar. While this is the first stamp yet made available that has been good for more than five pounds, it is announced that this year there will be no canning sugar allotments. So it probably will not mean that the average family will get more sugar than under the old regulations. However, it is stated that prospects are encouraging for a more plentiful world supply of sugar and if more sugar can be allotted, it will be done later in the year.
April 6, 1972
• Nancy Gigliotti, 36-year-old housewife and mother of nine, was one of two elected to the Fairfax R-3 School Board in Tuesday’s election. She is the first woman to be elected to this position in some time, as Anna Anderson served in the 1930s. Before the Gigliottis purchased the Johnny Hart farm on Route 46 east of Fairfax, they farmed near Amherst, Ohio.
• At a meeting of the Presbyterian Session Tuesday evening, Rev. Wm. Riek presented his resignation. He has accepted a position with the Charles Still Hospital in Jefferson City and will begin his duties next week. After school is out, the family will move to Eldon to a small acreage they own.
• Members of the Fairfax R-3 music department earned one I rating, 18 II ratings, and nine III ratings at the Music Festival at NWMSC in Maryville recently. Kathy Cleveland earned a I on her piano solo and will advance to state.

• The Fairfax R-3 Early Childhood Center students recently spent the day at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska. This trip was a culimating activity for the children following a unit on zoo animals. Stories which introduced some of the animals the children got to see at the zoo included “Curious George,” “Za Za’s (the Zebra) Baby Brother,” and “Tacky the Penguin.”
• Trivia by Dub Harrington: “Do you know that the first day of April 52 years ago was Easter, April Fool’s Day, and also D-Day on Okinawa World War II? Eighteen days later, my army unit was taken off the line with 3,000 casaulties and 1,400 killed.”
• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Thought for the day…‘seconds count, especially when dieting.’”
• The Atchison County Soil & Water Conservation District held its annual meeting March 27 at the Rock Port R-II School with over 100 present. The program consisted of a welcome from Chairman Samuel B. Graves, the Tarkio Academy Choir, Natural Resources Conservation Service report, and the annual poster contest winners recognition (judges were Mayors Paul Buck, Vilas Jones, and Willis Weedin). The overall county poster winners were: Brittany Hogue, 3rd place; Lacy Moore, 2nd place; and Jade Hughes, 1st place.
• A retirement dinner party was held to honor Roger Southard who recently retired as fire chief of the Fairfax Fire Department. Roger began with the Fairfax Fire Department in 1977 and for the past two years has served as fire chief. Robert Erwin, the new fire chief, presented Roger with a retirement plaque.
