April 4, 1947

• Several Rock Port friends received a nice gift late last week from Miss Bessie Capper of Seattle, Washington. She mailed a quantity of bright-colored camellias to Miss Isabelle Grebe for distribution locally. Miss Capper, always mindful of her friends in the old hometown, makes a practice of sending flowers from the northwest at various times during the year.

• The Cliff Fentiman barbershop now gives three-chair service. Last week, James Sipes, a former employee, came back from Forest City to resume his connection with the shop, and Jim Amthor has been added to the force.

• Christian “Bud” Husing, who a short time ago bought a small acreage from Mrs. George E. Brown on Highway No. 275, just across the bridge at the northeast corner of Rock Port, has started erecting a dwelling on the tract.

• Probably no one is worried about your immediate future except your creditors.

• An issue of the St. Joseph News-Press late last week carried an item which said that Jim Underwood, a Rock Port native but resident of St. Joseph for many years, had been robbed of a $300 watch while he was in the operating room of a St. Joseph hospital. It was stolen from his clothing. A man suspected of the theft was later arrested on a warrant charging him with grand larceny. The News-Press also said, “Around the turn of the century, Mr. Underwood was one of St. Joseph’s best-known saloonkeepers and was regarded as one of the best-dressed men in the city. For the past 25 years he’s been living in semi-retirement on a Saxton road farm. He is more than 80 years old.”

• Rock Port High School’s music department received 17 honor I ratings (the most the school has ever received) and 12 II ratings at the annual district music contest in Maryville March 23.

• Blue Jay Corner Roller Cart Sports by Tom Knierim: “The Rock Port P.E. classes have invested in buying small 4-wheel carts to run around on in the gym. They are square sections of wood with four small rollers under them and they stand about three inches off the ground. Propulsion is obtained by pushing with the feet and hands.” Besides it looking like a “demolition derby” when they play sports using the scooters, “it is a very fun sport and enjoyed by all.”

• The will of Fay Hughes Oakman was read in Probate Court this week as follows: $100 to the Hamburg Cemetery; $100 to the Millsap Cemetery; and the remainder of her estate is to be divided equally to the Rock Port Methodist Church and the Elmwood Cemetery. Her 83 acre farm located south of Rock Port is never to be sold and the income each year from the land will be divided equally between the church and the Elmwood Cemetery.

• North Star Lodge #157 recently recognized Loren Demott for his 50 years of service to the Masonic Lodge.

• Forty Rock Port Elementary students participated in St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Math-A-Thon. They raised $2,456.08. Students collected pledges of money for every problem they completed in a workbook furnished by St. Jude’s. James Neemann won a boom box for raising the most money.
