Citizens Bank & Trust, originally Citizens Bank of Atchison County, began as a state chartered bank on March 20, 1886, when the Articles of Agreement were filed with the State of Missouri. Citizens Bank of Atchison County officially became incorporated in the State of Missouri on March 28, 1902, with elected officers being James M. Scamman, president; W.A. Rupe, vice president; Joseph Durfee, secretary and assistant cashier; and D.A. Colvin, cashier. It is unknown at this time as to where the bank originally operated in Rock Port before the construction of a new bank building at 314 Main Street began in 1920. The “finest” banking house in Northwest Missouri opened to the public at an open house on Saturday, June 18, 1921.

Citizens Bank of Atchison County joined the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) on April 26, 1934. Officers of the bank in 1952 were the following: C.H. Goppert, president; Donald Jeffries, vice president, Earl Lash, vice president; Helen Fehrman, cashier; and Maxine Eddy, assistant cashier.

The bank continued to operate at 314 Main Street until construction of the new bank building began in 1966. The bank moved to the 101 N. Main Street location in 1967 where bank operations continue to this day. The new facility allowed the bank to provide new banking services, including after-hours deposit service, a drive-up motor bank, and added office space.

Citizens Bank of Atchison County was granted full trust powers on September 19, 1978, and officially became Citizens Bank & Trust (CB&T) on April 30, 1979.

The bank’s officers in 1987 were Charles W. Knierim, president; Ann Husing, vice president/comptroller; Maxine Eddy, cashier; and Beth A. Alitz, assistant comptroller.  In 1988, Citizens Bank & Trust changed ownership with 100% of its ownership being those living in the Rock Port community and/or being related to those in the Rock Port community.

CB&T purchased its first branch location in 1999 from the Bank of Craig in Craig, Missouri. This location is no longer in operation following the Flood of 2019.

Officers of the bank in 2002, after 100 years of banking in Northwest Missouri, were Jerry Moore, president/trust officer; William Whited, vice president; Ermal Wilson, vice president/security officer; Kevin Clark, assistant vice president/comptroller; Marilyn McMahon, assistant vice president/cashier; Lola Davis, assistant cashier; Teresa Gayler, assistant vice president/compliance officer; Stephen Showalter, assistant vice president; Karen Tiemeyer, assistant trust officer/board secretary; Matt Clifton, loan officer; and Susan Liles, assistant cashier.

CB&T purchased a second branch location in 2004 from Bank Midwest in Mound City, Missouri. A new bank facility was constructed in 2009 at 904 State Street in Mound City to house that branch where operations continue today.

Elected officers in 2022 are as follows: Brock Nuckolls, president/trust officer; Marilyn McMahon, vice president/IT; Teresa Gayler, vice president/compliance officer; Mark Bennington, assistant vice president/security officer; Kandi Dowdy, comptroller; Courtney Grossman, cashier; Kymm Nuckolls, assistant trust officer/board secretary; Ashley Cook, assistant cashier-bank; Tabitha Foote, assistant cashier-branch; Julie Graham, administrative assistant; Ross Hastert, loan officer; and Jacob Erdman, loan officer/branch manager.

Brock Nuckolls, president, stated, “We are forever grateful for the business from our bank customers over the past 120 years. The bank has been able to contribute to the community in so many ways and assist customers financially through personal loans, business loans, ag operating loans, machinery and equipment loans, livestock loans, home loans to include home construction loans, vehicle loans and more. Ultimately, we would not be where we are today without our owners, our directors, our employees, and our customers, all past and present. We are honored to serve our customers in Rock Port, Atchison County and Holt County, as well as the surrounding area as we continue to be your ‘Locally Owned, Hometown Friendly Bank’.”
