April 18, 1947
• About 60 Atchison Countians met at the Memorial Building in Rock Port April 9 to organize the Atchison County Rod and Gun Club. The purpose of the club is to promote better fishing and hunting, and sponsor trap-shooting and other sports in line.
• A total of 17,000 baby chicks came “off the hatch” at the Tarkio Hatchery Thursday and were shipped to various places throughout the United States.
• The grand opening of the beautiful new Atchison County Implement company John Deere store on Main Street, owned by George W. and Ethel F. Knepper, will be held Thursday, April 24, “John Deere Day.”
April 20, 1972
• The first annual C.O.E. Banquet was held April 6 at Reva’s Walnut Inn. The banquet was organized, financed, and conducted entirely by the students of the program. The purpose of the banquet was to enable the students to thank all those involved with making occupational education possible in our community.
• In The First National “Teller Tells” column: “Another classic of the old days was loaned to us by Troy Shaw. While removing his belongings from the old blacksmith shop on Elm Street, he found the day book or ledger kept by his father, Dan Shaw, when he did all of the blacksmith work for the David Rankin and allied farms. Many repair bills were for 10¢ and hardly any charge ran to the dollar mark.”
• Miss Colette Barnes, a student at the Jane Brooks School for the Deaf, Chickasha, Oklahoma, was selected to demonstrate how children learn to read and answer oral questions by lip reading at a recent luncheon for Wives of Officers of ATC held in the Artillery Room of the Fort Sill Officers’ Club. Colette is the 7-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Barnes, Westboro, Missouri.
• A 1971 Mac semi-trailer truck was totally demolished when the driver was eastbound on Route B and, according to him, he swerved to avoid a herd of rabbits in the roadway. The truck went into the westbound lane, into a ditch, through a farm fence and overturned onto its right side in a field. No injuries were reported. A summons for careless and imprudent driving was issued to the driver.
• The seniors at THS have been enjoying themselves during their study halls since the senior lounge opened last Monday. The seniors may play ping pong, watch color T.V., play cards or other games, talk or just relax. A sofa and a few chairs are available, as well as a pop machine.
April 17, 1997
• The WJJM Radio Gospel Quartet will be in concert Sunday, April 20, at the First Baptist Church in Tarkio. Wendel Wright, James Dudeck, Jim Brown, and Mark Dudeck together bring a combination of sincere faith and toe-tapping gospel harmony.
• Construction is underway on the newest addition of Heartland Recreation Center, a 20’x20’x10’ air-conditioned racquetball court. Racquetball Plus out of Littleton, Colorado, has been contracted to do the work, which is expected to be completed April 18.
