• Dr. John M. Waugh, associate professor of surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and son of Dr. and Mrs. C.M. Waugh of Tarkio, was heard Wednesday afternoon on Station KFEQ, St. Joseph, in a 15-minute talk, “Cancer to the Laity.” The noted Mayo expert spoke Wednesday night at a meeting of the St. Joseph Clinical Society at the Hotel Robidoux in St. Joseph.

• The city is making a parking space for trucks on the east side of the North City Park. The parking section is being graveled. A city ordinance prohibits trucks from parking on Main Street.

• John William Bigley died the evening of his 93rd birthday at his home in Tarkio. Born in Iowa, he came to Nodaway County, Missouri, at age 22 and later he moved to Atchison County, Missouri, where he lived for about 63 years. For 40 years he was the clerk and 42 years a board member of the Lone Star School District. On February 25, 1882, he was married to Mary Ellen Sallee, who survives him with their six children.

• Mr. and Mrs. Frank Peterson of Tarkio have purchased a four-story building in Lincoln, Nebraska, and are moving their household goods to Lincoln Monday. The building is known as Dayton Hall and is a dormitory for girls who are students at two business colleges in Lincoln. The Petersons will have a seven-room apartment in the building. Mrs. Peterson is to be in charge of the dormitory. One of their sons is at Tarkio College and another is attending Wentworth Military Academy at Lexington.

April 27, 1972

• Mrs. James B. Shaum, Jr., and son, Blaine Shaum, who just returned from Vietnam, and her aunt, Mrs. Doris Murphy of Phoenix, Arizona, will leave May 6 for Paris, France, to visit Tom Murphy and enjoy the sights. On the plane trip across they will be accompanied by Mrs. Darrell Marti, who will visit the James McCalls in Italy and Mrs. Florence McMillan, who will join a tour group to visit the Greek Islands.

• Services for Charlie Morgan Wilson were held April 24, 1972. He was born in Tarkio May 19, 1884, the son of Wilton V. and Frances (Foster) Wilson, and had lived in Tarkio all his life. He was a longtime merchant in Tarkio having started with Hursts at the age of 19 and he and his wife purchased and operated the business in 1931 until his retirement 15 years ago.

• This week’s featured C.O.E. student is Mary Beth Hull, employed at the high school under the supervision of Mr. Greg Prather, Principal. Mary Beth has been working in a secretarial capacity in the principal’s office and for the C.O.E. coordinator.

• Over 1,000 people attended the Northwest Missouri Sewing Fair held April 19-20 at Maryville. One of the 17 booths at the fair was Atchison County’s demonstrations of making bound buttonholes and preparing facings. Other Atchison County representatives worked at the refreshment and registration booths.

April 24, 1997

• Twenty-six participated in the annual Bike-A-Thon sponsored by the Tarkio and Westboro Lions Clubs. The kids were treated to pizza following the event.

• A buffet dinner will be held on Sunday, May 4, at the little red schoolhouse in Westboro, Missouri.

• Work is currently underway at the Northwest Missouri Learning Center located on Main Street in Tarkio. New cement walks, entrances and parking areas are being done for the convenience of clients and patrons.

• Tarkio Boy Scout Troop 88 served over 300 people at its annual Boy Scout Fish Fry held Friday night, April 18, at the Tarkio Elementary School.
