April 25, 1947

• The Chevrolet truck of Al Holliway was badly damaged by fire Wednesday morning. The truck was in the repair shop of the Sliger and Son garage and some work was being done on it with a cutting torch. Gasoline leaking from the gas tank ignited and in an instant the gas tank of the truck was aflame. The truck was pushed from the shop and the flames soon extinguished, but not before most of the wiring was ruined, motor damaged, and cab badly burned.

• Albert Hall has purchased 80 acres of land from the Van Taylor estate, which adjoins the farm of Mr. Hall to the south. Mr. Hall now has 200 acres, all in one tract.

• Approximately 100 persons attended the annual Parent and Son banquet of the Future Farmers of America which was held at the school auditorium Friday night of last week. Officers of the organization are: president, Doyle Southard; vice president, Charles Scarlett; secretary, Donald Lee Haun; treasurer, Wm. Ray McClasky; reporter, Billy Purchase; sentinel, Jim Crawford; and advisor, J. Hayden Pyeatt.

April 27, 1972

• A 21” lawnmower will be given away by the club Saturday afternoon in front of the Thiesfeld Clothing. The event is being sponsored by the Community Club to raise funds for the summer baseball program.

• Very favorable conditions locally have resulted in much grain in the ground far ahead of schedule.

• A new slaughter house and pens are located on the Carl Williford acreage just north of Fairfax and have been in use several weeks. Improvements have also been made at the locker plant in town. Mr. and Mrs. George Davis are operators of Fairfax Locker and Slaughtering Service.

• Over The Back Fence By Nancy Gaines: “Thought for the day…sound advice is exactly that, 95% sound and 5% advice.”

• Kathy Athen, owner of Kathy’s Country Hair Fair on Main Street in Fairfax, is leaving Fairfax and will be working in Tarkio at Sharlyn’s Beauty Den. Kathy has been here almost 14 years. Betty Wennihan, who has been in the shop, will continue and there will be a new name for the business.

• Eighty-five students from Fairfax, Rock Port, and Tarkio attended the 43rd Atchison County Government Day. The students participated in a mock trial in which a woman was charged for purchasing liquor and giving it to minors. County and court officials played the parts and the jury of freshmen students found the accused innocent.
