May 2, 1947

• Don Spaulding of the St. Joseph Livestock Exchange addressed a crowd of about 75 farmers and members of the Kiwanis Club at the school building Tuesday evening on the subject of “Balanced Farming.”

• The seniors are planning a trip to Lincoln in the near future. If arrangements can be made with the Chamber of Commerce, the class would like to go May 12. Places of interest the class would like to visit include the Capitol building and the University Museum.

• Conditions remain unfavorable for farm work. Frequent rains have kept farmers out of the fields since the warm weather came.

May 4, 1972

• Hunter’s Hy-Klas Food Store in Fairfax advertised the following: 5-pound bag of Pillsbury Flour for 49¢; large head of lettuce for 19¢; three pints of strawberries for $1; Folgers Coffee 1-pound can 69¢; package of eight Hy-Klas coney or hamburger buns for 33¢; and bacon for 69¢ per pound.

• In Kindergarten News: “Thanks to Mrs. Kenneth Owens for the loan of the big picture of the Aberdeen Angus cattle. We like to hear our voices on the tape recorder. Some of the things we record are: ABCs, counting 1 to 100, 5s to 100, and 10s to 100; songs; and rhymes. Jeff Kottman treated us to ice cream cones for an early birthday celebration at the Kountry Kitchen.”

• Extreme damage by flames, smoke, soot, and water was done to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Chambers early last Wednesday night while they were away for a short period. Malfunction of an electrical heating plant, with possibility of lightning play a role, was the cause. Flames burned through the kitchen cupboards, where Mrs. Chambers had her prize china stored.

• The Community Betterment Clean-Up Day was judged a success as two truckloads of trash were picked up from the streets of Fairfax and hauled off. Cooperating in the project were the Boy Scouts, their leaders, and Brownie Scouts. Lunch was provided by Mrs. Dale Kemerling and Mrs. Roger VanderBoom and Wayne Jones provided a generous donation to buy dairy treats for all.

May 1, 1997

• A new business will be opening soon in the former C.L. Squires insurance office on Main Street in Fairfax. The business, owned by Helen Golden, will be called Helen’s Gift Wrapping Shop.

• The annual junior and senior banquet, prom, and after prom party was held at the Fairfax School Saturday night, April 26. The theme was “Reflections of Love.” The students arrived by cars, limo, and a one-horse carriage. Brian Hunter and Theresa Pennel were crowned king and queen.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Thought for the day…‘no two people are alike and chances are, both of them are glad of it.’”
