May 9, 1947

• Joe Stevenson flew Harry Luckhardt Saturday to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Mr. Luckhardt purchased a purebred Hereford from Wyoming Hereford Ranch.

• Two hundred and fifty business and residential telephones in Tarkio were put out of working order when fire last Thursday took a shed at the rear of Beaty’s Hy-Klas Food Store and a shed behind the Tarkio Candy Kitchen and caused the lead on nearby cables to melt from the heat. In a record time of 14 hours, two employees of the Farmer Mutual Telephone Company of Clarinda, Iowa, were able to make repairs and restore the telephone service.

• The annual field trip of Tarkio High School students was held on Monday, May 5. Students traveled to the Charles C. Wennihan farm north of Tarkio where they played various organized games and roamed at will through the woods.

• Dr. J.A. Thompson will preach the Baccalaureate sermon to the members of the institution’s graduating class of 1947 the evening of Sunday, May 18, at David Rankin Hall. Joseph Addison Thompson began his presidency here in 1887 and continued as president of Tarkio College for 43 years. For the past 17 years, he has served as president emeritus.

May 11, 1972

• Frank Hopkins, Class of ’96 and Tarkio College’s oldest alumnus, made a $65,000 challenge to the alumni to again match his proposed gift. Saying he had most of his “challenge money raised – and that isn’t HAY,” Mr. Hopkins urged the group to a fundraising effort at the alumni dinner held in the connection with the 1972 Commencement held May 6 and 7 in Tarkio.

• Mr. Howard Wheatley is ending a brilliant coaching career at Tarkio High School this season after being the track coach there for the past 24 years. During this time, his teams have won more than 40 major track meets.

• The Federal Trade Commission has issued a trade regulation rule requiring all articles leaving a manufacturer after July 3 to have a permanent label giving instructions for care and maintenance. The rule covers all garments including hosiery.

• Miss Connie Griffin, a Tarkio College graduate with a major in political science and social science teacher at Rock Port High School for the past three years, has been notified that she has been selected to attend Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, for Women in the Navy. Miss Griffin is believed to be the first woman in this area ever to be chosen for the school. After 16 weeks of schooling, she will be commissioned as an ensign.

• Four-way stop signs at the intersections of Third and Fourth streets on Main Street were installed Tuesday. It is hoped that this will help control the traffic flow and enable drivers to back from the curb with more safety.

• Yards of the Month for May selected by the Tarkio Community Garden Club include: Chris and Robbin Volk, 511 Ash Street; Larry and Georganne Goodloe, 1006 N. Sycamore Street; Kevin and Sue Carder, 212 N. 10th Street; Jayson and Dallas Prather, 408 Broad Street; Darrel and Lois Wiley, 802 Walnut Street; Donnie and Donna Meek, 601 Walnut Street; and Helping Hands Day Care, 411 Maple Street.

• Members of the Tarkio High School National Honor Society spent Thursday, May 1, cleaning up the North Polk School yard, the Niedermeyer Park, and the South City Park. The students gave up their planned field trip to spend the day volunteering.

• El Grupo Atotonilco, a troupe that performs regional dances of Mexico, will be featured at the Rankin Hall Chapel Sunday, May 11.
