May 9, 1947
• Carroll Schooler, Maryville salesman and native of Fairfax, came close to being in the Worth storm Tuesday of last week. He was in the Worth restaurant when the cloud came up and decided to get his new Chevrolet off the mud streets before it rained. He asked the restaurant proprietor and his wife if they wanted to get away from the storm and together they drove south on the highway and watched the storm. On their way out of town, they asked a man they passed if he wanted to go with them. He refused and was killed by the storm.
• The Fairfax Junior High held its annual school picnic at Lake Contrary Park in St. Joseph, Missouri, Friday. While in St. Joseph, they toured the Chase candy factory where guides explained the process in making the candy and the students were able to sample the various candies.
• The Fairfax High School will honor 20 seniors and three service men with diplomas at the 52nd annual commencement Wednesday, May 14. The 20 seniors are Margaret Bowness, Marion K. Ball, Donna Maurine Fulton, Doyle W. Southard, Merna Jeannine Shafer, Lois Verlene Taylor, Georgia Evelyn Hathorne, Billy C. Purchase, Carol Mae Wright, Marie Wilson, Mary Elizabeth Slemons, Donald Lee Haun, Mildred Ellen Sloan, Dorothy A. Lawrence, Jerry Whittington, Martha Dean Carlson, Edith M. Fries, Francis Keith Jones, Joyce E. Fellows, and Lois Mae Weedin.
• Initiation of seniors will start Saturday morning when they will appear on the streets with the attire designated by the initiation committee. Alumni members are to say “Hi Ho Silver!” to seniors and then get some unusual entertainment.

• Mrs. Marie Browning celebrated her 95th birthday Wednesday, May 3, while a patient at the Fairfax Community Hospital. Visits from over 60 friends, as well as 100 birthday cards, flowers, and a birthday cake made the day memorable.
• Mrs. Allen Payne (Vickie Wright) suffered first and second degree burns on the arms and legs Monday when clothing she was washing in gasoline ignited. She was taking grease from garments in the bathtub of her farm home.
• Three girls vying for honors in the 1972 graduating class at Fairfax R-3 had grade averages so close it was difficult to determine standings. Marcia Graves and Joy Oswald have been named to make honor speeches at commencement with Stephanie Sly a very close third.

• This past week Fairfax Fire Department got a new member…a woman. She is Kim Heits of Fairfax. She went on her first fire call last Thursday night when the firemen burned the home where Mary Anola Ball used to live south of Fairfax on Hwy. 59. To date, the Fairfax fire department has 16 regular firemen and she is on the auxiliary list.
• Spring has arrived in Mrs. Jan Taylor’s first grade class at Fairfax, where 10 baby chicks hatched in the classroom. The project began when the chick eggs arrived and were placed in a prepared incubator. Mrs. Taylor and her students diligently cared for the eggs by turning them for several days.
