May 16, 1947

• Fairfax Kiwanians are to celebrate their first anniversary Tuesday evening, May 20, with a banquet at the Presbyeterian Church parlors at which wives of the members will be guests. Van Murchie of St. Joseph, noted humorist and former Fairfax citizen, will be the speaker.

• Over 300 Atchison County farmers and business men gathered at the Tarkio Community Building May 8 as guests of the five county banks. The meeting was called to make plans for the continued well-being of the farm business. J.W. Burch, director of the Agriculture Extension Service, explained a plan whereby 50 farmers can have a special county agent to work with them for one year in setting up a balanced farming plan on their farms.

• Miss Ann Sillers of Kahoka, Missouri, will be attending the alumni banquet. Miss Sillers was a graduate of the class of 1897, which will celebrate its golden anniversary this year. She taught for several years at Evening Star school near here and is now Home Demonstration Agent in Clark County.

May 18, 1972

• Construction is underway on a cement block building in Fairfax City Park to house new restrooms. The building is located where the old wood structure stood. Plans are to have the new facility completed by the Community Fair June 14.

• At the annual FFA parent-son banquet Friday evening, Gary Johnson was named Star Greenhand and Harold Gomel was named Star Chapter Farmer. Wilbur Wright received the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree and plaque.

• The Fairfax Bulldogs ended the track season with their most outstanding effort of the year at the state outdoor meet in Columbia last Saturday. The Bulldogs finished third. The two mile relay team broke the existing school record in a time of 8:35.9 and easily outdistanced all others for first place. Harold Gomel placed third in the discus with a throw of 130’7”. Low hurdler Jim Davis placed third with a time of 21.2. The mile relay team also broke the school record in a time of 3:36.5 which was good for second place.

• Seven Explorer Scouts and Explorer Advisor Tom Miller met at Miller’s Repair Shop Monday evening. Officers elected were: President Larry Vaught, 1st Vice President Gregg Smith, 2nd Vice President Rick Moses, and Secretary Cecil Demott.

May 15, 1997

• The school superintendent and his helpers set fire to a house on the school property at 5:00 a.m.. It only took 20 minutes for the house to go up in flames thanks to paper trash spread throughout the house. There were men on the roof of the school building with water hoses just in case. This will make way for the new library campus. The $500,000 improvement project was approved by the school district’s voters and construction will begin soon.

• The 102nd Fairfax High School commencement for the 25 graduating seniors will be held Sunday, May 18, in the Fairfax auditorium. The 1997 senior class motto is “We are not afraid of tomorrow, for we have seen yesterday and we live for today.” The class song is “Never Say Goodbye” by Bon Jovi.
