• Dr. Donald McMullen, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and son of Bard McMullen of Tarkio, has taken a leave of absence from the University of Oklahoma medical school to travel to Tokyo, Japan, where he will be engaged in medical research and laboratory work for the U.S. government. Another son of Bard, Dr. Robert McMullen, is now in Bangkok, Siam, with Pan American Airlines. He is a Tarkio College graduate and during the war served as a meteorologist.
• Dr. G.R. Wempe arrived recently from Kansas City, Kansas, to begin medical practice in Tarkio. Until he secures an office of his own, he will be associated with Dr. J. M. Davis. He graduated from the medical school of the University of Kansas, Lawrence, in 1942, had a period of internship in Grace hospital in Detroit, Michigan, then spent 36 months in the U.S. Army as a captain in the medical corps in the European theatre. Following his service, he spent eight months at Vaughn General Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and seven months at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City.
• Alfred Sloey, former Tarkio resident who has made quite a name for himself as a member of the famous singing trio the Riders of the Purple Sage, is now on billboards along the highways in an advertisement for Butter-Nut Bread. Mr. Sloey now resides in Hollywood, California, and leads a busy life fulfilling radio engagements and appearing in Republic Pictures.

• Capt. Nathan D. Hathorne, U.S. Air Force, has been awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal by the U.S. Military Forces on Taiwan under the command of the U.S. Navy. Capt. Hathorne, a 1951 graduate of Tarkio High School, is presently assigned to the office of The Inspector General, Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Nebraska, as a security staff officer.
• Melvin Moore, Gary Davison, and Gavin Doughty, Jr., showed off the radio controlled model airplanes they constructed and flew at the flight breakfast. Another sight to see at the flight breakfast included Bernard Kreifels’ home-crafted plane with pusher driven propeller. Kreifels of Falls City, Nebraska, stated that it took three years to construct and that he had been flying it for about two weeks.
• Diane Sybert, diminutive nine-year-old daughter of Mrs. Mary Sybert, hauled in a rare spoonbill catfish Sunday. She made her catch on Rock Creek near Langdon, Missouri, using a night crawler from her own bait business on the hook.
• Members of Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199 of the American Legion erected a flag pole at North Parkway Square and presented a flag of the United States to the housing project.

• Sue Davis of Tarkio is being honored for 25 years of service as an employee at Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio. Sue started working at the bank as part of the C.O.E. program on May 22, 1972.
• The Northwest Wildcats baseball team played a doubleheader in Clarinda, Iowa, Saturday, May 17. In the second game, Wildcats pitcher Ehren White of Tarkio pitched a no-hitter, leading his team to a 10-1 victory. The Wildcats had 10 hits and 11 stolen bases in the win.
