May 23, 1947

• Mrs. John R. Steele, the former Miss Sadie Ellen Donelson, has won first prize in a weekly radio amateur program, sponsored by Station WKRC, Cincinnati. Her award for whistling the Londonderry Air was a 17-jewel Gruen wristwatch and a chance to compete for a yearly grand prize of a $300 diamond ring.

• Bonnie Sue Close, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Close, has received a very nice gift from Tsingtao, China. A knit dress, cap, and bootees, made of pink wool with white scallops at the hem, wrists, and the top of the bootees, all of which was entwined with ribbon, were made by a sister in a missionary station in the mountains near Tsingtao and was sent by Bonnie Sue’s uncle, Bill McCoy, who is stationed in China on the U.S.S. Eldorado.

• Glade and George Bilby have had a construction force at work the past three weeks pouring cement for the rodeo stadium just north of Fairfax on the H.A. Sly land.  The east section they are currently working on will seat approximately 5,000 persons. The west section bleachers to be erected will seat 2,500 to 3,000 people.

• Two hundred twenty-four people attended the annual Fairfax High School Alumni Banquet, the same number that attended last year’s banquet.

May 25, 1972

• Characters reminiscent of the former television program “Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club” marched into the hearts of alumni members Friday evening of the 51st annual alumni banquet. Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, the Three Little Pigs, Big Bad Wolf, Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella (before the ball), her two stepsisters, the Prince, Fairy Godmother, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Sleeping Beauty, and Prince Charming presented the program. Familiar songs “Mickey Mouse Song,” “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah,” “Once Upon a Dream,” and “Wish Upon a Star” were used.

• High school cheerleaders selected for the 1972-73 school year are Debbie O’Riley, Rita Hawkins, Kay Jean Hawkins, Kathy Muldrew, Terry Graves, Susan Norton, and Jony Lawrence.

• Mrs. Joyce Hedrick was the surprise honoree of the annual staff as they announced dedication of the 1971-72 yearbook volume at the awards assembly Thursday. Mrs. Hedrick is an alumna of Fairfax High School and has been employed as secretary for several years.

May 22, 1997

• On May 23 the Fairfax Post Office will issue the Bugs Bunny postage stamp. Bugs Bunny has also been appointed the “ambassador” for the postal service’s new youth stamp collecting program, stampers.

• Ms. Rolinda Ford, elementary principal at Fairfax, has been offered the principalship in Kotzebue, Alaska, and the board agreed to release her from her contract in order that she might accept that position. She will be going to Alaska August 1. Rolinda has been with Fairfax school system for two years and has a daughter, Rochelle, who was a fifth grader this year.
