The Tarkio/Westboro/Fairfax Food Pantry board met Tuesday, May 10, with 13 members present. Churches represented were: Tarkio – Baptist, First Christian, and Presbyterian; Fairfax – Methodist, Christian, and Presbyterian; and Westboro – Methodist and St. John’s Lutheran. Sam O’Riley represented Community Services.

President Anne Barnett presided over the meeting. In March, 36 families representing 62 individuals were served. In April, 37 families representing 62 individuals were assisted. Treasurer Anita Sutter presented the financial report. She also reported that the pantry will be receiving two new upright freezers.

Providing food for Atchison County children who will be out of school for the summer was discussed. It was decided that the food pantry board and Community Services will co-sponsor a program to help meet those needs. The program will be called “Summer Love.” Each county church will be asked to provide specific child friendly foods. Those and/or monetary donations will need to be collected at each of the churches by Sunday, June 12. Food pantry board members will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, to pack individual boxes to be given out. Questions about the program may be directed to Sam O’Riley at Community Services.

The pantry will be open the third and fourth Tuesdays and Thursdays of May and June from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. It will also be open on the third Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Fairfax Presbyterian Church will open the pantry in June and St. John’s Lutheran will open the pantry in July .

The next board meeting is Tuesday, July 12, at 9:30 a.m. The food pantry is located at 315 Main Street in Tarkio.
