May 30, 1947

• The condition of Miss Courtney Carroll was still very critical following the 16-year-old’s fall from the “Moon Rocket” ride at Fairyland Park in Kansas City. Miss Carroll, who formerly attended school here, has a broken back and pelvis and internal injuries after the ride went out of control and threw her out and her companion to the floor. She hit a guardrail and then fell to the ground. According to the Kansas City Star, the Fairyland manager is claiming she jumped, but all indications from those on the ride with her show otherwise.

• A 1941 Ford car belonging to Dale Schoonover “ran away” Saturday morning from its parking place in front of the Marion Humphrey residence on Maple Street. It moved down the hill past the Culbertson residence and crashed into a Ford pickup belonging to Roy Sparks. The car’s emergency brake did not hold.

• Precipitation during the past week amounted to a total of 2.82 inches, 2.32 of which occurred Wednesday, May 28, as the rain, beginning Tuesday night, fell continuously throughout the day until 7:30 p.m.

June 1, 1972

• Retiring Superintendent Dee A. Ferguson was honored at a dinner last Thursday at Eppley Lounge and presented a gift of some golf clubs by the Tarkio School staff. This year culminated 44 years in the public schools.

• Five deer were killed over the weekend, four by vehicles and one by a thoughtless gunner with a shotgun. Conservation Agent Sperber urgers drivers to use caution. Agent Sperber fed the orphan fawn, found near the shot doe, with a bottle until it was taken to Squaw Creek for care.

• Members of the Tarkio Softball Association have been working at the ball field reconstructing the outfield fence. It is now ready to be painted. Workers included Gordon VanGundy, Bob Wallace, Richard Alsup, Mike McMillan, Harry Blewitt, and Dave Vance.

• The senior class of 1972 returned from their senior trip at the Lake of the Ozarks Sunday, May 28. Fifty-two seniors and their sponsors spent three days at Kirkwood Lodge. The weather was beautiful and everyone had a very enjoyable time.

May 29, 1997

• With a combined total of over 100 years in the teaching profession, Norm Walker, Lois Powell, and Judy Seymour are celebrating their retirements this summer. Norm has been teaching band and vocal classes in music departments for 40 years. After teaching for 33 years, Lois Powell has decided to retire. Judy Seymour has spent 30 years in the teaching profession.

• Tarkio/Westboro, Missouri, Lions Club Bike-A-Thon winners were: girls – 1st, Cassie Nelson; 2nd, Carmen Herrick; and 3rd, Britney Laur; and boys – 1st, Adam Johnson; 2nd, Trevor Sunderman; and 3rd, Chris Brown.

• Tarkio High School selected the following students for the 1997-98 Flag Corps: Amanda Salmond, Elizabeth Low, Andrea Murphy, Katherine Strauch, and Noelle Jagger. They will be working in cooperation of the Tarkio High School Marching Band.
