May 30, 1947

• Fairfax had no buses Wednesday and will not have any until the strike of the Burlington Trailways bus drivers is settled. Drivers on all Burlington buses went on strike at 6 o’clock Wednesday morning. The strike affects bus service in 13 states.

• Friends of Jack Combs, Jr., will be interested to know that he made his first solo flight at Wasco, California, from the Wasco airfield. Mr. Combs and Cecil J. Howard, along with eight other friends, have organized a flying club known as the “Wasco Flying Club” and have purchased a Piper Cub Super Cruiser. The plane was bought through the Rankin Aviation Incorporation at Tulare. Mr. Combs started his flight training at Auburn, Nebraska.

• Some 30 Kiwanians and Kiwanis queens from Fairfax attended the charter night banquet of the new Craig Kiwanis Club Monday evening. The new club has 36 charter members. Approximately 225 were present at the banquet.

• Clarence B. Godbey has been employed as instructor of music in the Fairfax schools for the coming term. His employment will enable the school to again offer students a full music course, including band and glee club. Because no instructor could be employed during the war years, the school had had to drop the music department.

June 1, 1972

• A full week of Bible school was concluded Friday evening with a display and program for parents and friends at the Methodist Church. Classes for the 92 enrolees were conducted at the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Christian churches.

• Miss Fairfax 1972 will be chosen from these 11 lovely young ladies at the Community Fair June 14: Debbie Miller, Rita Hawkins, Jony Lawrence, Jo Cleveland, Linda Scarlett, Krista Hunter, Karen Simmons, Marilyn Jones, Sharon Swindler, Reta McCartney, and Kathy Horning.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “I was standing visiting with Kay at the flower shop Saturday afternoon when we saw three little guys coming up the street, carrying fishing poles, but no fish, just like Huck Finn, almost. They were tired and Lane Seymour stopped and picked them up in his pickup. When they passed us, they were all smiles and thankful for the ride.”

• Atchison County Development Corporation Director Carole Taylor recently went on an impact trip with a group of 14 others who traveled through New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. They visited with 21 companies promoting the benefits of moving their companies to Missouri.

• There’s a new automated answering system at Community Hospital Association that enables better and quicker communication services for the public to reach specific administrators or employees.  The new system will allow you to key in the person’s extension number if you know it.

• The fifth grade class, along with teacher Tammy Kisker, were visitors of the Fairfax Forum office as one of their job shadow stops on their last day of school.
