• The Golden Rule Stores in Rock Port, Tarkio, and Mound City are advertising overalls for men for $2.98 and overalls for boys at $1.98.

• According to two eminent professors of Cornell and the University of Chicago, your marriage stands a better than average chance of being successful if: your courtship lasted between four and five years; you are not an only child; you were married in a church; you lived in the country during childhood and adolescence; you are fond of your mother and father; the wife worked before her marriage; you don’t change your residence often; and the wife is a year or more older than the husband.

• The acting postmaster general, J. M. Donaldson, has issued an order which prohibits the mailing of cigarettes and tobacco products to Germany, including APO’s.

• Harold Luhrs, local farmer and aviation enthusiast, was last week elected president of the Missouri Flying Farmers Association at an organization meeting held in Moberly, Missouri. The meeting was attended by more than 60 flying farmers of the state. Leon Garst of Watson, Missouri, who also attended, was named state delegate to the national Flying Farmer convention, which will be held at Oklahoma City in August.

June 1, 1972

• The 1970 Census of Housing counted 3,472 housing units in Atchison County. Of that total, there were 1,818 housing units with air conditioning with 1,356 using room units and 462 with a central air system. There were 2,833 households with at least one television set. There were 2,478 units with a clothes washing machine, 1,727 with a clothes dryer, and 267 with a dishwasher. Owners occupied 2,058 units, renters 1,085 units, and a total of 326 units were vacant year round with 28 for sale and 46 for rent.

• Harold Parish is expanding the H and H Enterprise trailer sales on North 275. He is manufacturing pickup covers, has camper sales and rentals, lawn mower rentals, and is planning on expanding the rental business to include tillers, power tools, and motorcycles.

• Rock Port’s Board of Public Works is in a race with the July and August heat to get two new generators online before air conditioning demands force the city to buy peak power at demand rates. A second engine-generator was unloaded May 25th at the city plant and should be in operation by late August if all goes well.

May 29, 1997

• The 5th Grade Lock-In was held May 16th at the Rock Port School from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Fun events held, prizes given, and food consumed at the lock-in included bowling, sing-a-longs, basketball tournament, air band lip sync contest, hide-and-seek, obstacle course, carnival with 134 stuffed animals, Ho Hos eating contest, limbo, and 10 pizzas from Zip-Stop.

• Mrs. Rebecca Hance was named the Rock Port R-II Outstanding Educator for K-6th Grade and Mrs. Kyra Mills was named the Rock Port R-II Outstanding Educator for 7th-12th Grade.

• The Rock Port Blue Jays traveled to Jefferson City to compete in the 71st Annual 1A High School Missouri State Track Championships at the Dwight Reed Stadium May 23 and 24. The Lady Jays had competitors in five events. The Jays had competitors in 11 events and placed 2nd overall as a team.
