June 20, 1947
• In the heavy rain of last Thursday afternoon, Dr. and Mrs. C.L. Barnard, driving south from Clarinda, Iowa, collided with a hand car on the railroad tracks near Clearmont, Missouri. Several section men were on the hand car and had covered themselves with canvas for protection from the rain and did not see the Barnards’ 1947 Nash coupe, although the car’s lights were on, and the Barnards did not see the hand car.
• Two of Tarkio College’s graduates are appearing in print. Dr. Eunice Work, Professor of Classics at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, has published a paper titled “Teaching and Christian Education.” Dr. John Marlin Raines will publish in the Transactions of the American Philological Association for 1947, a paper titled “Comedy and the Cosmic Poets in the Greek Epigram.”
• On July 1, Tom Price of Tarkio will become the Star Route carrier for the post office department, replacing Pleas Owens of Westboro. Mr. Price will carry the mail from Craig by way of Fairfax and Tarkio to Westboro and back, a distance of 31 miles.
• Loyd Meek of Stanberry, Missouri, has purchased and is now operating the Abell Produce business in Tarkio. Meek was formerly with Vogt Produce of Stanberry.
• The Tarkio Woman’s Club flower show was held June 14 at the community room in the First National Bank. Mrs. R. R. Staples won the sweepstake prize and Nancy Browning won the prize on arrangements.
June 22, 1972
• Marshal G. Ivy, Officer-In-Charge of the Agricultural Marketing Service’s Livestock Market News office in Omaha, Nebraska, received the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Superior Services Award May 23. Ivy, a native of Tarkio and a Tarkio College graduate, was presented the award by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Earl L. Butz on the Washington Monument grounds in Washington, D.C.
• Bruce Gardner, Assistant Professor of Music at Tarkio College, will sing the lead role of Prince Tamino in Mozart’s opera, “The Magic Flute,” in “Opera Under the Stars” theatre of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.
• Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hurst of Tarkio returned June 11 from a 21-day People-to-People Goodwill Tour in Eastern and Western Europe with the Missouri Cooperative Leaders Delegation. They visited Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union.
• Mrs. James Painter and Mrs. Robert Lade of Tarkio and Mrs. Elizabeth Chapin of Rock Port left Sunday for the Missouri Bar Center in Jefferson City, Missouri, to attend a pioneering program in which 80 Missouri school teachers are studying law.
• Sandra Miller of Westboro was selected as Rodeo Queen at the Nishna Valley Saddle Club Rodeo held last weekend in Shenandoah, Iowa.

• The Avalanche crew experienced a first on Tuesday, June 17, when it was discovered that all the picture negatives were blank. An hour later they mustered up some pictures that they could restage and took a picture of the Avalanche gang commemorating the event.
• In honor of Flag Day, Community Care of Tarkio held a flag raising ceremony with a flag that had been flown over the White House on December 20, 1996, especially for the facility in Tarkio.
• Fletcher Motors, Inc., in Tarkio recently purchased and installed a new lighted sign at their used car dealership.
• A cannon is displayed at the Steven and Becky Campbell residence at 411 Maple Street in Tarkio. The cannon was made by Becky’s uncle, William Turner of St. Joseph, Missouri. Turner was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and made cannons as a hobby.
