June 20, 1947

• The community was shocked and grieved shortly before noon Sunday when it was learned that Rev. D. L. McConnell had died suddenly at Rock Port Lutheran Church after he entered the building to conduct the regular morning services. He had conducted services at Langdon earlier that morning and there had been no signs that he was other than in his usual health.

• Allan Barker, the former operator of Blue Moon Cafe in Rock Port, was leaving Wednesday for Iceland where he is to be engaged as head chef for the army for a three-year span. For two or three years, he followed his business as a chef on the Alaskan highway, making a salary of from $500 to $650 a month.

• A man who has served terms in two Iowa prisons and the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas, was put in the Atchison County Jail for hog theft and then attempted suicide. He gained possession of a safety razor blade belonging to another prisoner and slashed both arms and lost considerable blood. He was taken to the Maryville hospital for surgery and was brought back to the jail Friday.

• A truck carrying fruit was traversing a temporary bridge on Cow Branch on No. 275 when it collapsed due to flooding. As the truck and bridge began to be carried downstream, the driver and a passenger managed to climb to the top of the cab. One of the men was able to snag a tree and hang on until he was able to make his way to shore and then walked to town. The other man was carried a mile or two further until he, too, snagged a tree, then later made it to a nearby farm. They had a joyful reunion later that day.

June 15, 1972

• The paving of Interstate 29 from Hwy. 136 to the Iowa line was postponed due to rain, and is set to begin Friday. The scene should be quite a sight as the contractor will be using a slip form machine with a train of vehicles and equipment. The contractor hopes to break records and maybe make one or more days of a “mile a day.”

• A parking lot of the Methodist Church in Rock Port will soon be under construction on the corner of Opp and Nebraska streets. The two houses that currently sit on the lot will be torn down to make way for the much needed addition of a parking lot.

• Ann Million, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Million, Rock Port, was elected to one of the most prestigious posts to the Missouri 4-H program last week. She was elected to the post of vice-president of the State 4-H Council.

June 12, 1997

• Missouri Valley Agri Service in Rock Port has taken the initiative in the ag chemical industry’s pro-active stance on environmental stewardship by serving as one of 11 sites across the state to granulate empty pesticide containers. MO Valley will gather and granulate approximately 10-15,000 containers, which will be processed for use as industrial pallets.

• Rock Port’s McDonald’s is going up! An opening by late summer is still the plan.

• The yard of Brad and Julie Burke was named the Rock Port Yard of the Month. The Burkes have spent countless hours landscaping.
