The Brownville Concert Series has announced The Darryl White Quintet will perform at the Brownville Concert Hall next month. Darryl White, Jeff Jenkins, Hans Sturm, Michael Pujado, and Michael Warren play a wonderful mixture of traditional jazz, contemporary styles and even jazz spirituals. In 2020, Darryl White recorded his fifth record. This record was a wonderful and heartfelt tribute to all those who dealt with loss of loved ones and injustice. Much of the music from this album will be featured in this concert along with a sprinkling of traditional jazz that includes music from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis. It’s sure to be one you won’t want to miss! The show will be in cabaret Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 17, at 2:00 p.m. Sponsors are Blake and Julie Hurst, Kay Rosenbohm, and Charles and Carole James. The Sunday show will be dedicated in memory of Charles Anderson and in honor of Jody Anderson. Darryl White is offering a free trumpet master class Saturday, July 16, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Students will also receive a free ticket to the show. Interested students must call the box office by July 8 to register.

Dr. Darryl White is associate professor of trumpet at the Glenn Korff School of Music. White’s performance experiences include a wide range of idioms. He has appeared as guest soloist with the Omaha Symphony, Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, Mesa Chamber Orchestra, Grand Junction Symphony, Lake Forest Chamber Orchestra, Roaring Fork Jazz Festival, University of Nebraska Faculty Brass Quintet, the University Faculty Jazz Quartet and many other solo appearances and guest clinicians with college jazz bands and orchestras across the country. A native of Warren, Ohio, White has been playing trumpet since the age of 9. Before his current position at the University of Nebraska, White’s first college teaching experience was at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1993 where he taught for two years. White holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Youngstown State University, a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Colorado. While in Denver, he was a member of the Aries Brass Quintet-in residence at University of Denver-Lamont School of Music and the Denver Brass. At Lamont he was Instructor of Trumpet and also participated with the Faculty Jazz Quintet.

Jeff Jenkins has released four CDs in the last 15 years. The most recent on Capri Records entitled “Cique” is an eclectic exciting blend of jazz and funk. He has appeared with many jazz greats in that amount of time as well, including Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris, Clark Terry, Dakota Staton, Frank Morgan, Marlena Shaw, David Fathead Newman, Teddy Edwards, the Count Basie Orchestra, The New York Voices, Bobby Hutcherson, Nelson Rangell, Renee Marie, John Abercrombie, and Richie Cole. He attended the University of North Texas, where he led his own groups. After college he moved to New York where he studied with the likes of Richie Beirach, Kenny Barron, and Fred Hersch, while working on Broadway, and in the clubs.

Double bassist Hans Sturm has performed as soloist, chamber, orchestral, jazz and improvisational musician throughout Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and the United States. Sturm received his doctorate from Northwestern University and, prior to his appointment to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies and Coordinator of the String Department at Ball State University for 17 years, now Professor Emeritus.

Michael Pujado, a native of Chile, has lived in the United States since 1989. Michael has been playing music professionally since the age of 16. Michael currently plays with some of Omaha’s top musicians – The Confidentials, Heidi Joy, Matt Wallace and the Gulizia Brothers.

Internationally acclaimed drummer Michael Warren embodies every exciting element that makes for a rhythmic experience that is “other worldly” and “funky beyond belief.” The percussive genius he displays on the drums knows no limits, making ballads equally as lush and exciting as more up-tempo dance selections. His musical intuition is telepathic. As one of the most well-rounded and creative drummers around, he is particularly known for his unmistakable “Kansas City Swing Feel.” The late jazz drummer Max Roach praised Michael’s prowess on the drum kit, and Lincoln Center’s Wynton Marsalis, upon hearing Michael play, exclaimed about his “in the pocket” groove: “Yeah man, you in there!”
