July 18, 1947
• Robert VanLeuven’s two-headed calf is now mounted and on display in the window of the Tarkio Hardware Store on Main Street. Joined at the neck, the two heads of the calf each have two eyes, nose, and mouth, but only had one brain and one jugular vein.
• Construction is nearly completed on the new emergency science building furnished to Tarkio College by the Federal Works Agency. It will house the biology and chemistry departments temporarily until the proposed new science hall can be erected.
• Frederick Driftmier, who graduated from Tarkio College in 1938, has been selected as chaplain of the Punahou School in Honolulu, the largest private school in Hawaii. He will begin his duties in September, taking charge of all religious activities for the school’s 1,650 non-secular students.
• Miss Aulora McIntyre, who graduated from Tarkio College in 1911, was awarded a gift in recognition of 30 years of service in the Sudan in Africa when the International Missionary Convention of the United Presbyterian Church was held recently in Monmouth, Illinois.
July 20, 1972
• Approximately 60 two-man teams will tee off July 22 at the Tarkio Golf Course for the Second Annual Best Ball Golf Tournament.
• Another busy and profitable six weeks of summer school with Miss Madeline Mayes as director came to a close Friday, July 14. Thirty-five girls and 61 boys were enrolled. Most of the students enjoyed an all-day field trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska, Tuesday, July 11.
• Hidden and dwarfed by a magnificent stand of corn was Max Van Hoozer as he checked the crop on Ranch One, which he operates north and west of Tarkio. Just north of this field on the other side of the road is a field which was completely tasseled on the Fourth of July instead of following the old saying of “knee high.”
July 17, 1997
• Work is underway to improve the parking lot at Tarkio Elementary. The work should help with the water collection on the drive and make it run off into a ditch, preventing erosion.
• Jim Culver assumed duties as preacher at the United Methodist Church in both Westboro, Missouri, and Tarkio, Missouri, Sunday, June 8. Jim and his wife, Mona, and three children came to Tarkio from Odessa, Missouri.
• Earlier this summer, IAMO Telephone Company began an extensive project of replacing all of the buried cable in the Westboro exchange. The cables will be replaced with fiberoptic cable and new, filled, copper cables.
• Kelly Rohlfsen is the new owner of Colfax Insurance Agency in Tarkio and is the new secretary of Colfax Farmers Mutual Insurance Company. Kelly is replacing Chris Martin. Kelly and his wife, Kris, and three sons are currently living in Odessa, Missouri, and are looking for a home in Tarkio.
• Wildcat Days VI will be held this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 18, 19, and 20, in Westboro. The event will include a men’s medium pitch softball tournament, a BBQ, and a street dance.
• The Tarkio Lions Club is hosting a dance on Saturday, July 26, at the Community Building in Tarkio to raise money for the sight fund. Under the Influence will be providing music for the dance. The band features Tarkio’s own Jason Riley.
