• Miss Eleanor Simons of Charleston, South Carolina, will arrive next Monday to take up the assistant librarian position at the county library. Miss Simon is a graduate of Charleston College and Columbia University and has been employed recently at the New York Public Library.
• The Rock Port Feed Co. is expanding its operations. The company has purchased from Uhlmann Grain Co. the elevator at Nemaha, Nebraska, and will operate it under the name of the Peck Grain Co. Operators of the Rock Port Feed Co. are E.R. Peck and Wayne Peck.
• Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Roberson have the distinction of becoming grandparents to three babies born within three days this past week. Two are twin girls born Sunday, July 13, weighing 4 1/2 pounds each, and the third is a girl born Tuesday, July 15, weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces.
• Larry McCoy, 7-year-old grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil McCoy and Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Winningham, arrived Saturday from North Hollywood, California, by plane, making the trip unattended. The young traveler reported that having been disgusted at the earlier cancellation of his trip to Missouri due to floods, he had about decided to get a motor boat and make the trip by water.
• The Mail has received a letter from Miss Colleen Ammons, who recently went to California to visit relatives and take dance instructions from teachers there from the New York School of Dancing. While in California, she attended the Overell murder trial.
July 13, 1972
• Atchison, Nodaway, and Holt county 4-H members will be participating at a special livestock field day at the Paul Wessler farm two miles north of St. John’s Lutheran Church July 17. The event is a practice session for the District 4-H Livestock Judging August 26.
• Leo Moore, Jr., 20, of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, was arrested July 6 at 9:35 near the Tarkio airport. When he was placed under arrest he had in his possession 440 pounds of raw marijuana, which he had cut on the levee east of Tarkio and placed in a U-Haul trailer he was pulling behind his pickup.
• A four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing will be available to students at Tarkio College this September. Students will complete the two-year, pre-nursing curriculum at the Tarkio campus followed by a two-year and one summer professional curriculum at the Independence, Missouri, branch of Graceland College.
• Ted Shaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Shaw of Rock Port, joined Ithaca Gun Co. as director of industrial relations. He will be responsible for all industrial relations activities in the company, including the Cameron, Missouri, and Dunville, Ontario, operations.

• On Tuesday, July 1, 120 golfers participated in the Citizens Bank & Trust Golf Tournament. This annual event was held at the Rock Port Country Club. Proceeds from this event totaling $1,000 will be used for the Atchison County Fair Multi-Purpose Building.
• Zachary Pankau was named Little Mr. Rock Port and Miranda Deatz was named Little Miss Rock Port at the 4th of July festivities.
• On an extremely cold 4th of July, the children still managed to compete in the annual Frog Jumping Contest. Winners of the 34 entrants were: 1st – Cole Wilczek with his frog Mark, 8’7”; 2nd – Ashton Lloyd with her frog Brogan, 8’1 1/2”; and 3rd – Rich Comstock with his frog Smalls, 8’ 1/2”.
