• In the attractive new building erected by Frank Cooper on East Main Street, the Farm and Home Supply Store is now open for business. Above the store are six apartments, four double apartments and two bachelor apartments. The building is the first new construction in Tarkio to be especially designed for apartments.
• A former Moslem mystic, later a professor of Islamics and a Christian pastor, and now a bishop of the Methodist Church in India, will be the guest speaker at the Tarkio Methodist Church on August 3. Bishop John A. Subhan, head of the episcopal area of Bombay, was born in Calcutta in 1897 of a liberal Moslem family and given the name “Abdus-Subhan” meaning “the servant of the Holy One.”
• After a siege of many weeks in St. Joseph’s hospital in Kansas City following a fall from an amusement ride and suffering critical injuries, Courtney Carroll is now home in Tarkio. She was transported by ambulance from Kansas City and accompanied to her home by a registered nurse and her mother, Mrs. Curry Carroll.
• Guy Hampton of Tarkio has purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Dick Sanders the John Boettner farm in the Linden community. Mr. Hampton, who has taken possession, also purchased the crop.
July 27, 1972
• Atchison County Sheriff’s Department received a report early Friday morning from Alton Vogel of near Hamburg, Iowa, that Dennis Henshaw had discovered a body of a man snagged on his throw line which was in the Nishna River. Coronor Mike Minter and the Sheriff’s Department went to the scene about a half mile from the Iowa line. The subject was later identified as Roy John Borrego, 23, who had been missing since about 8:00 p.m. July 19.
• Jim Buthe, operator of Buthe Oil Co., suffered serious injuries to both legs in an accident Monday morning at his service station in Tarkio. He was inflating a truck tire when the rim blew off and struck him. Both legs were crushed below the knees.
• Mr. Harold Frame will assume the duties of Vocational Agriculture instructor for the 1972-73 school year at Tarkio R-I.

• Summer basketball leagues are wrapping up this week at Heartland Rec Center in Tarkio. The 15-19 age division concluded Monday night with the Tarkio Academy boys claiming the title.
• Caleb Colflesh with the Tarkio Boy Scout Troop 88 recently completed his Eagle Scout project, which included work at Niedermeyer Park in Tarkio.
• Tarkio Lions Club members and other community volunteers recently installed a new fence around the South City Park ballfield in Tarkio. Funds for the new fence were donated by local organizations.
• Twelve visitors from Peru, Indiana, spent part of the day Thursday, July 17, touring Tarkio Academy. The visitors were in Tarkio because Youth Services International (YSI) is looking at developing a facility on Grissom Aeroplex in Peru.
