August 8, 1947

• The Tarkio Fire Department was called to the Walter Diggs residence at 5th and Park Saturday afternoon where a car had caught fire. The car, belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Percy McMahon of Jefferson City, had caught fire when Mr. McMahan stepped on the ignition prior to leaving on a trip to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Blaine Steck, noticing the car as he passed along the street, stopped and succeeded in putting out the blaze, which apparently had been caused by defective wiring.

• Charles Kenworthy, who has the distinction of being the first United States pilot to down an enemy plane over North Africa in WWII, has returned to the Army Air Corps and is now in Lucerne, Alabama, waiting assignment. The war-time major attended Tarkio College before the war.

• J. F. Brownlee is the proud possessor of an autographed photograph of United States President Harry S. Truman. He received the excellent likeness recently and was pleased to read its inscription, “To my good friend, Faye Brownlee, With Kindest Regards, Harry Truman.”

• Mrs. Geneva Jane Dunlap, a sister to the late Jim and Henry Hurst of Tarkio of the Hurst Mercantile Store, celebrated her 100th birthday August 3. Mrs. Dunlap, one of 11 children, became the mother of 10 children, five of whom are living, together with five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 

August 10, 1972

• First National Teller Tells: “This week closes the most successful summer season of the Mule Barn Theatre. Over 10,000 have attended the five productions presented in the historic structure.

• At the Tarkio City Council meeting Monday night, the council approved a beer license for Don Harvill. Harvill is buying the business formerly operated by LeRoy Hall in Tarkio. Alderman Delbert Greever reported that a cottonwood tree over 100 feet tall had fallen at the South City Park. The State Highway Commission has moved the speed limit signs on Hwy. 59 which were in the wrong place. There is no change in the speed limit through the city limits.

• Bob Lade was presented an electric golf cart last week. The cart was a community project initiated by the Tarkio Rotary Club to reward a deserving community worker.

• A new course titled Carpentry will be introduced at Tarkio High School this fall in which juniors and seniors will be building a residential home. A lot has been purchased in Northview Addition and construction of the three bedroom, ranch style home will begin August 28. The home will occupy some 1,300 square feet and will include a two car garage and full basement.

August 7, 1997

• Several hundred people attended the opening ceremonies of the 11 & Under C.A.B.A. World Series at the South City Ball Park in Tarkio Friday night, August 1. Besides the baseball games, several special activities have been taking place, including an arts festival which featured Festival and local bands Good Question and Law and Order, hot air balloon rides, a baseball card show, and fun games for the kids.

• The Sampler in Rock Port will soon be closing after 19 plus years in business.
