August 15, 1947
• Harold K. Townsend called his mother, Mrs. Margaret Townsend, Wednesday morning of last week by telephone from Munich, Germany. Harold is in the Air Force.
• In the county library’s monthly report, Blanche Jones, librarian, showed that 1,970 books were circulated and 16 films loaned for use with groups. One hundred sixty new titles were added to the collection. A book station has been set up in Fairfax at Catron’s drug store. The most unusual request during the month was from Honolulu, Hawaii, which came as a result of publicity in the Tarkio Avalanche.
• Another week of intense heat and dry weather has cut anticipated corn yields in this section. Up until Wednesday, temperatures have reached 100 degrees or more each day and there had been no rain for about three weeks.
August 17, 1972
• The familiar old diamond-shaped highway signs warning motorists of a school in the area will be a thing of the past on the state highway system when classes start this year. In their place will be a new pentagon-shaped sign featuring pictures instead of written words. The new “school crossing” sign is a picture of a boy and a girl walking in a crosswalk; the new “school” sign shows the two figures without crosswalk lines.
• The Atchison County Homemaker Council is sponsoring a tour to Omaha, Nebraska, September 28. The group plans to tour Boys Town, Union Pacific Museum, and the Joselyn Art Museum.
• Mrs. Larry Vaught began work today at Hunter Hy-Klas grocery. Mrs. Vaught was employed in a Tarkio supermarket during her senior year of high school.
• Harold Burgess is publishing his “Swan Song” in the Squaw Creek Digest this week as he prepares to leave the refuge as manager and move to a similar position in Iowa.
• Northwest Missouri State College will officially change its name to Northwest Missouri State University August 13. From 1905 to 1919 the Maryville institution was the State Normal School, from 1919 to 1949 it served as State Teachers College, and then the subsequent years it was a State College.
August 14, 1997
• The 32nd annual Fairfax Fair is scheduled for this weekend, August 15-17. Miss Fairfax candidates are Sabrina Nemyer, Jessica Ray, Melinda Bradfield, Lexi Ballenger, and Jenea’ Kemerling. Junior Miss Fairfax candidates are Megan O’Riley, Mikayla Bowlin, Ashley Grossman, Jamie Whittington, Rachael Sipes, Andrea Paris, Kasie Morris, Stephanie Sinkhorn, Katy Hunter, Emily Seymour, Janah Heits, and Katie Heitman.
• The Fair Haven friendship dinner was held August 8 in the community room with LaVerne Gann and Florine Hall as hostesses. Table decorations were colored balloons, paper place mats, nut cups, and napkins. The birthday song was sung for Preshie Mills, Norbert Lodygowski, Florine Hall, and LaVerne Gann.
• Charles Golden was elected Fairfax American Legion John Richards Post No. 284 Commander. Other new officers are: Ed Ball, adjutant and finance; Jack Vernon, membership and 2nd vice commander; H. Q. Gomel, 1st vice commander; Gene Bradfield, service officer; Darrell Jones, historian; Doyne Swan, chaplain; and Charles Norton, sergeant-at-arms.
