• Floyd LaHue of Langdon sold a load of white corn that weighed 237 bushels. At $2.51 a bushel he realized $600 for the load.
• A new idea for a fish fry was tried Sunday evening when several couples went to various streams hereabouts and caught their own fish. They met afterward at the city park to fry the catch.
• The Centennial committee of the Atchison County Fair has a whisker contest arranged for the second day of the fair. Prizes will be offered for various types of beard – length, breadth, thickness, and so forth – and also for the most scraggly chin adornment. You’ve got at least four weeks in which to nourish a crop of whiskers.
• Members of the Hamburg, Iowa, Chamber of Commerce met with the Atchison County judges Monday in regards to a new road in Watson, Missouri. The road will be south from the Will Carey farm to Lewis School and cross the Nishna River near the Otto Putnam farm and on into Watson, then south of Watson to the highway leading to the Brownville Bridge.
• Suffering from some sort of food poisoning, nine members of two Miller families were taken to the hospital Thursday morning of last week from the Rose West farm north of Rock Port. Those affected had either eaten cabbage, corn, or milk, although all did not partake of all of the food. Due to Bertram and Bartholomew Funeral Homes providing the ambulance transportation to the hospital, the burial of Al Linville, whose funeral was in progress at the time of the Millers’ transportation, had to be deferred to that afternoon.
August 10, 1972
• A new building to house the Clark Ford-Mercury car agency is going up east of Rock Port on Route 136 with Rolf Fertilizer Supply putting up the all steel building. Don Clark, owner, expects to move the agency from its current location at the corner of Main and Mill Streets in about two months.
The Rock Port R-2 high school A-team cheerleaders will sponsor a pop bottle drive August 19. Money collected will be used for new outfits and spirit boosters.
• Atchison County voters turned out in record breaking numbers 1,900 strong for the largest primary election in the history of the county. The unusually high turnout was attributed to the large number of state candidates on both sides, plus the hot race for Congress in the Sixth District and the nine men running for the sheriff’s post along with a number of newly franchised voters in the 18-21 age bracket.
• Atchison County 4-H members brought in 459 exhibits to the 4-H Achievement Days which were held at the Tarkio Elementary School.
August 7, 1997
• Ralph Greer Post #49 of the American Legion elected officers for 1998. They are: Kenneth Lee, Sr., commander; Jack Wilson, adjutant; Elmer Davis, finance officer; Ronnie Bradley, membership chairman; Richard Burke, vice commander; Luther Hudson, Jr., vice commander; K.J. Lewis, service officer; Everette Underwood, historian; Bud Husing, chaplain; and C.L. Squires, sergeant-at-arms.
• The Northwest Stars basketball team won first place in their division at the Show-Me State Basketball Games. Team members include Dan Palmer, Rock Port, and Zac Smith, Fairfax.
